I have one, it's awful. It doesn't map like a vacuum, it's super dumb. You have to lay down a perimeter wire and it just goes wherever it wants until it runs out of power. Setting up the perimeter wire is a huge pain because it has to be placed in a very specific pattern to cover every edge and obstacle. You'll spend days planning the layout. It never finishes my lawn, so it has to go out multiple times. I have the 1/2 acre model and it's just so slow. Full lawn completion will take 2-3 outings over days. The mobile app is worthless too, it has no controls at all. It will never stay connected to WiFi. There are extra (paid) add-ons for everything. It also uses crappy razor blades (like shaving ones), so it can't cut very thin grass, it just pushes it aside. The only positive is that it's quiet, you could run it at night and nobody would know. However, I wouldn't buy one after owning this unit, they're not ready for primetime.

I have this for a year. This does not do well with slopes...especially if the slope is near the edge (boundry wire). constantly slips over the wire and then shuts down cos it is "outside the wire". I hae to then carry it back inside and resume mowing.
Also the wheels constantly dig trenches near sharp turns and then get stuck

There is no set pattern or route. It just pinballs around your yard like a Gen 1 roomba.

robo lawn mower technology is new and not as polished as indoor robot vacuums. I can't imagine how many ppl would spend over 1K on new units. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Maybe it's new here in the US, but I recall my uncle in Sweden telling me that his neighbor has one of these robo mowers. This was over 10 years ago. Hopefully the technology catches up here and get more affordable.

There really are no good US options at the moment to be automated without a boundary wire.

Another common issue is theft of these devices.

These and Husqvarnas Automower are "OK" options, with varying downsides.

Generally speaking, I'd wait another 2-3 years for a device with better capabilities. Someone posted Segway's as an example, which is not available in the US yet. There's half a dozen different ones on Kickstarter with similar "proposed" functionality.

Are the 1/8 acre mowers limited by the included boundary wire or by mow per charge? For example, if I used perimeter wire encompassing 1 acre with the 1/8 mower, would it come back to charge 7 times until it was done?

I suspect you need a perfectly manicured and flat even yard for this to work at all.

Anyone own one of these.. I'm worried my hill in front yard is too high, is it smart enough to cut long way, instead of up and down. Still not sure if these are like a dumb robot vacuum (non lidar)

You gotta love their optimism, complete with marketing pictures of the robot lawn mower "working" right next to little kids playing and picnicking in the yard. Uh... No!

I have the M model and 1/4 acre and it's been great this year. Yard is flat and it took a few hours to install the wire. After that I've only had to tweak the wire a few times in different areas.

The only lawn maintenance I do now is water, fertilize and trimming.

Eh. Idk then. They still haven't come out with lidar ones then. But when they do, I bet there going to be $1000s idk.. I've kept my eye on these before.
I'm not sure about lidar though; there's no walls when your outside that is reliable to keep it from going out of bounds

There's a few guys working on an open-source mowing bot. Haven't checked on the progress lately, but last I saw it, it was pretty freaking awesome.

I've had my 1/4 acre WR140 for 3 mowing seasons. If someone stole it, I'd immediately buy another. So much time savings and not being out in the heat. Saved a bunch versus paying kids to do a bad job or a lawn service.
In my yard, after firmware and tweaks over the years, it will go weeks without me touching it. Just runs, unless it rains, and returns to charge. Peak spring I run it 4 hours daily. Summer it runs 2. This is in a flat, relatively simple fertilized and watered fescue yard.

I have a flatish yard, but it's got a trampoline, a desk, and a concrete pad that prevent it from being a proper rectangle. Would I need to boundary line around each of those?
