tell me you arent familiar with m1 laptop performance without telling me
That might be because this also uses the M1…
When did you have the M1 Air?

The reason I ask is late last year Resolve was updated to run natively on the M1, so if your bad experience was prior to the update, it's possible things have changed.

A couple years ago, Apple moved away from Intel CPUs (i3, i5, i7) and started making their own (M1, now M2). I'm oversimplifying things, but when software runs natively, these systems perform amazingly well, even with 8GB of RAM.

Prior to the shift, and with Windows, it's like we've gotten used to driving around in a truck with the bed full of concrete, towing an RV. We all know that 8 gallons of gas isn't enough to drive 20 miles to the beach and back. But if you take that concrete out of the back and unhook the RV, suddenly 8 gallons of gas is more than enough.

I still stick to 8gb is fine for 90% of users. By time you feel need to upgrade there will be many new models, sell it get 70% value back and buy a new model on sale

Who are these imaginary 90% of users? If this is really the case they should just get the iPad air and save like 60% because it can do everything that these users need

People like me.90% of users don't know coding or programming is. They check email and Facebook and watch YouTube. Tell me why they need 16gb again?

People buy MacBook for macOS, not the hardware. It's just a light portable laptop that last all day. It's why I own it and all my family members.

Hardest thing their pcs do is save photos and videos from internet.

Apple is 100% correct on how they market is as standard 8gb and surcharge 16gb because people simply don't need it.

Absolutely true, a iPad can do it all. But physical buttons / keys and such triumph touch

I'm a pretty typical computer user. I use the Affinity suite for photo editing and vector illustration. My Windows computers have 32 GB of RAM. I use the 8GB 1st gen M1 Air and it's been completely fine for me. I love it. Aside from Affinity, I use iMovie for helping my kids with school projects. I've never wanted more RAM. I still use Windows for a lot of stuff, partly because after decades of Windows use I have a pretty complete productivity suite that I just haven't had time to recreate on Mac. But I love my M1.

Which laptop would you say is better - MacBook Pro with M1 or MacBook Air with M2? (13 inch models). Hypothetically, other specs otherwise identical

Things that matter to me: real world performance, battery life, and reliability/longevity

Yes, looks that way.

Wouldn't 150 dollars more for twice the storage seem like a decent deal? I'd say so. And I'd never pay for a Sam's or Costco membership no value there for me.

Probably the m2 unless you need the internal fan for processor intensive tasks.

Yes, since we are talking apple storage. Or you can get something like the Samsung T7 1 TB for $85 from the recent GameStop deal. External, but still fast.

The only way to answer that question is "do you need that extra storage?" If yes, get it. If no, don't. Only you can determine if that is a deal or not. Everyone's needs are different, there is no "catch-all" type machine.
