Been this price for a while now. I bought it in Aug for this price.

I've been slowly migrating most of my tools to cordless and am fully in the Ridgid ecosystem. I'm a weekend warrior, so cordless 18V is plenty for all of my jobs. The final piece was a circular saw. My current one was a 7-1/4" Hitachi that had been bullet proof.

But this checked the boxes so I went for it. It is super light and cut through 2x4 and composite decking with ease. While blade selection is somewhat limited compared to 7-1/4", there's plenty enough for any other home owner from coarse cut to finishing blades to diamond blades, etc. I struggle to imagine a situation where one couldn't find the blade they needed.

The one pseudo minus to this (and other 6-1/2" saws) is the blade is on the opposite side compared to 7-1/4". Not a deal breaker, but first several cuts just felt "weird" and took some getting used to.

But overall this is a solid purchase and I feel confident in it 100% replacing my corded 7-1/4" saw.

Your points are all fair and well received. 'Worthless' was a bit strong of an adjective and I will retract it here. Perhaps I should have said 'worth less to me than...' 😉 I think you distilled the essence of the utility vs. tradeoffs of cordless tools very succinctly. It is amazing not to have to drag a cord up a ladder or out to that shed to rip a single sheet! Those use cases could also favor owning a sharp handsaw - I can cut OSB relatively fast and accurately with an old Diston, and the only charging I require is the occasional sandwich and a cold beer at the end of it. (I am still not willing to give up my Skillsaw though!) FWIW, I used to think the same thing about portable bandsaws and caulk guns. I think perhaps I need to reconsider my stance on this particular tool as well.

Thanks for having a respectful, productive discussion about our respective opinions!
Awesome response, agreed and thank you! The passion of your post was not lost on me😁 At the heart of your statement you're right in that a corded Circ is what i'd pick if there could be only one🗡️. I also much respect someone who is willing to do the work by hand. I often go that route vs using some of the modern machinery and short cuts. People often look at me sideways but I reply "it's a free gym membership".

Doers always have my respect🍻! Someone who prefers to pay others is going to get all bent and thumbs down that🤣

Thanks, I believe I read the previous Octane models did not have the brake. The corded Skil Sidewinder I bought to complete a deck project about two years ago does not. It continues to spin a lot longer than the 1990s Craftsman it replaced. The brake probably should be a required safety feature on circular saws, just like a splitter/ riving knife and anti-kickback device on table saws.
Ironically the only part that has ever hurt me on a table saw was the anti-kickback device (no the table saw was not running at the time).

I haven't had a chance to use the Milwaukee version but, like most of that brand's wares, I have no doubt it is an excellent tool - at a premium. I suspect we'd agree that comparing a corded and cordless tools is all about which compromise we're willing to accept. Qualifying that distinction is a very individual pursuit with no perfect answers. However, it sounds as if that's a tool that does the work you want it to and that's great!
I agree, which is why I still own my corded saw. I know the day will come that I'll need it. With my luck that day is usually the day after I sell it lol

BTW, I got my Milwaukee 6.5" off Ebay "refurbished" tool-only for about $70 or 80, I can't remember the exact amount . It came looking brand new with nothing missing. I luckily didn't pay too much of a premium for it

It was many years ago, working on a bathroom remodel with a seasoned builder, when I was getting out the circular saw and jig saw to make cuts in plywood and 2x4s and he scoffed, got out his Japanese style pull saw and completed the same cuts in less time with no noise and little mess. It was a game changer for my work from then on.

Don't underestimate a good hand saw, especially when used in good hands.
Hmm, a Japanese hand saw is a strange tool to use for those cuts. Generally it's a specialized tool for undercuts and finish work.

At this point there are many cordless circular saws that perform as good or better than their corded brethren. You tube is full of comparison videos. I have't used my corded Skill saw in I don't know how long.

I bought (actually it was "free" with the $169 drill + impact Home Depot deal in August) the R8656 based on the Tool Box Buzz "Best Cordless 6-1/2 Circular Saw" head-to-head video and I've been totally satisfied. TONS of power even with the 2ah battery. I'm a DIYer.

That's what I had thought too. I was wrong. A Japanese saw like the double sided Ryoba will make quick work of resizing a 2x4 or making quick cuts in plywood to fit it around the many obstructions in a bath remodel.

Yes it is. The person that said its a "toy" has not answered to tell us what circ saw and bats he actually has. I hope he realizes his "toy" can cut his arm off.

I've been watching this… the original deal appears dead but they have had a combo with a regular 4Ah battery for $129 off and on. Now it looks like it's $119 for a limited time.

How much difference does the max battery make? I've got other ridgid 18v tools and I've been happy with them, but mostly impact wrenches, drivers and a drill.

Edit: looks like it's a different model now, OP's link is no longer to the brushless saw.

I would get a 7 1/4 because the blades are more common. In fact, I own this saw in 7 1/4 and think the saw is fantastic. So easy to use.

I know this is an old deal but I am seeing the brushless kit at the local HD for $99 "while supplies last."
