They are made out of cheaper plastic than the tough more expensive "rubbery" lanterns. I wouldn't drop these from a high distance.

If you want to hang overhead, the midnight black one is better. You can remove the top and hang it upside-down. It becomes a super floody downlight. I had one but then actually had to get a second one. It is really bright but it can be dimmed.
Sounds like you haven't used the dimming feature…
