The Duo is a first gen product and it feels like one. Wait for the Duo2 to drop or go with another phone all together.
Also note that these don't support 5G and that's now a must for any new phone purchase IMO.

Also, Microsoft must've learnt from their Duo 1 experience and manufactured a lot less Duo 2s than the Duo 1 after adjusting their expectations. So, we probably won't see a fire sale on the Duo 2s.

One of their cellular resellers (Boost, ugh) forced us to migrate our handhelds since they were 3G only -- and the freebie Android they gave us had a 5G radio. We went from soberingly zero reception to 2 bars of service.
What I'm saying though -- 5G isn't a boogeyman like you're claiming it to be. Sometimes it's actually useful for some people.

"Price has stubbornly hovered around $300 for a long time. I don't think they really want to sell these.

I tested in 3 different cities. I used 2 devices two newer 5G phones on Verizon, a Samsung S21 and Microsoft Surface Duo 2. The original Surface Duo was faster on 4G. YMMV. I shared my real world tests.
This phone went from $1,500 originally to less than $300 sometimes. Overpriced, but for early adopters. Microsoft has improved it so much!
That being said, the SD2 has seriously improved user responsiveness and usability and reliability. Best at multi-tasking, even over the Fold4, which I'm typing on right now. Fold4 is better in every other way.
I'll keep my SD1 to install full Windows 11 on it. I'll possibly sell my SD2 if I decide against the Fold4. There's a lot of helpful owners on the Duo reddit that Iearn from. Be cautious with those who only review devices, without real long term usage. I'm a serious Samsung fan who has a hard time leaving these dual screen devices. The big single screen hasn't sold me yet.
