Not a gaming PC, exactly. You're better off with something having a good GPU.
Is there anything that would be available in the $500-600 range? Portability is a factor as well, and I don't think he's playing any insanely heavy games.

Look into minisforum PCs, see what's in your range and google the "cpu and performance in <game your son plays>" to see if it plays well enough. There's usually YouTube videos demonstrating performance.

My son plays Xbox with friends on PCs. He wants to get a PC, and its been years since I've built one. I want him to have a small form factor so he can unplug it and take it with him to friends' houses. I was looking at a setup like this or a Beelink SER4 with Ryzen 7 4700U/4800U in the $350-$450 range. I also want him to be able to upgrade it over time to make it his own.

Any suggestions?
You would need to add and price in a eGPU via the TB Port to improve gaming performance. It will take time to setup via GPU drivers

Try this one: Restored HP TG01-2003W Pavilion Ryzen 5 5600G 3.9GHz AMD Radeon RX 5500 4GB 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Win 10 Home Black (Refurbished)

The NUC is fine for Roblox, but for something like Call of Duty it's a terrible choice. I'd just get him a laptop, unless you want him to bring a monitor to his friends house with him.

Sounds like 12th gen won't get this low though. Is the power difference worth the extra cost? I'm assuming the integrated graphics are the same?
The 12th gen will be this price in a year. The Iris Xe graphics are like 5% faster on the 12th gen.

This NUC is an absolute beast for a Plex server (if you have external storage). It can transcode several 4k HEVC/x265 HDR videos simultaneously.

Great idea! Do you happen to have a link for any?
Check eBay for HP Elitedesk 800. There are many listed in various configurations. Then load them up with RAM and storage.

Small, low powered PC with good performance per watt consumed.

Your Dell is more geared towards enterprise desktop work. But similar concept. It's just a bit bigger and older.

Before committing to this, consider an off lease enterprise mini. You can quite a lot of machine for about half the cost. They can be pretty sweet home servers running micro services.
im interested in one for my small business. Where do i find these?

I bought a Shield TV Pro because the 10th gen i5 laptop I had wouldn't transcode 4k fast enough to watch in real time.

Good to see 11th gen can handle it now.

If I didn't already have free hardware and a Shield TV Pro, I'd consider this as a Plex and Blue Iris server.

Considering this for a blueiris server. Will this handle 15-20 cams at 4k? Also need AI processing. Or should I go for i7?
