Not a dumb question at all. I have a ton of knives... have collected for years and I still don't know. You just made me Google something I should have Googled a long time ago, but never have. I've heard this metal and that metal over the years, whhether good or bad. I remember none of it.

I'm gonna start here and just start reading.

So, thank you for the question.

Military uses better steel because we pay for it. We actually end up paying 10x the going rate too, since politicians are brokering side deals.

Maybe a dumb question, but what steel should be avoided for a edc/camping knife? And what would be a "good" steel for a $50ish budget? I have knives ranging from $10-$300 (I know some of the higher end ones are great steel), but I can't look at a deal like this and know if it is good or bad

Ick. I'm already not liking that link's info. If anyone can find a top to bottom list of sweet knife metals that'd be great.

I'm headed to bed.

It too complicated to say best, it's a balance of ease to sharpen vs harness and holding an edge but brittle.

In general stay away from any knife steel under 8CR13MOV or 440C.

I have no doubt it's a lower end steel but it is also a $13 knife.

It's 13$ it's fine steel for 13$ weird knife steel gatekeepers gotta make their opinion known. Sure you can probably find a boat load of d2 knives at 20$-30$ but then you got problems there as well at least this is relatively rust resistant and easy to sharpen. It's a throw away knife for sure but fine for most buying at this price point. It's not s90v but its also 13$ 🤷
