It does at least come with unpressurized portafilter baskets. That's usually a good sign with cheapie espresso machines like this. You'll need a decent espresso grinder for that, though, and don't expect it to be cheap.

Not necessarily. There are vey cheap espresso makers with unpressurized baskets. Obviously they make terrible espresso...

This uses a pump (not steam pressure) and claims 15-bar. So that with the 58mm portafilter, the milk frother, and the price means that it's definitely worth a look.

Anything with milk though is going to need to be cleaned after each use so by the time you've cleaned everything up your latte will probably be cold. Smilie I'm betting that using the steam wand on its own isn't going to give good results beyond just heating the milk.

even their video on the youtube link shows almost no crema - looks sort of like a drip coffee. I for one prefer crema.

Latte first. Then clean. 😉

These are a lot of machine for the money. There isn't a single cheaper machine with a standard 58mm basket, and automatic milk frothing is a rare and expensive feature on manual machines.

Unfortunately, there are also significant downsides. I think these like Calphalon espresso machines are made by sunbeam; they have the same 3-eared 58mm portafilter as many inexpensive Chinese espresso machines. Schematics and replacement parts are not available. The pressure does not seem to be properly regulated or adjustable. The brew head is plastic and separate from the thermocoil so it won't heat the portafilter. Many aftermarket 58mm baskets apparently will not fit. Video by James Hoffman of the experience you may have trying to make espresso [youtube.com] with an unpressurized basket in a machine similar to this.

FWIW most of the other espresso machines around this price have similar issues, though. Just don't assume this machine can compete with good entry level espresso machines like the Breville Bambino, Bambino Pro, Gaggia Classic, Flair etc. based on the features list.

I got this machine as a gift, along with a KitchenAid conical burr grinder. For some reason the puck was always soupy and wet, no matter how firmly packed.

In commercial and prosumer espresso machines the 3-way solenoid disconnects the boiler and dumps pressure from the brew group at the end of a shot. In the process liquid is pulled out of the brew group drying out the puck. It is occasionally necessary to clear out coffee residue and debris from the solenoid by backflushing.

In most of the newer consumer espresso machines the solenoid disconnects the brew group and dumps pressure from the thermocoil. That leaves the brew group pressurized. The puck won't dry out much, but there isn't enough volume under pressure to create the sneeze associated with boiler machines without a 3-way solenoid. Backflushing isn't necessary or possible.

This is all doubtless true but... even without the solenoid the puck should not be soupy - there may be water atop a firm puck. A soupy puck is a sure sign that the grind is too coarse.

Good points on the build. Doesn't sound so great, but if it can pull a decent shot that's what ultimately matters. If! Smilie
