Unfortunately, that is not always going to work. We always eat vegetarian at taco bell and had a major food poisoning episode after eating their potato soft taco and/or bean burrito. Their quality, albeit was never the best, has gotten to some seriously dangerous levels. We just eat at chipotle now.
Food poisoning is a completely different story from food causing diarrhea, just how it's normally prepared. Literally any food has the potential to cause food poisoning if prepared, processed, or stored in unsanitary manner. Employees of any restaurant failing to wash their hands after using the bathroom or even touching cash or a credit card and then preparing food could introduce salmonella into food.

I had a horrible case of salmonella for a month from eating peanut butter when I kept eating more of the peanut butter to try to settle my stomach. I never even suspected that peanut butter could contain salmonella, since I only associated it with foods like chicken and eggs. So I wouldn't specifically associate salmonella with the entire Taco Bell chain.

Interesting that you picked chipotle as the safe option.

I've been eating at Taco bell (multiple locations, multiple cities) for years now and I only had a problem with their beans once. Albeit in that one instance, the burrito was sitting on a table for an hour and I tried to eat it without warming it up. So in your case, the issue could have been a particular store that doesn't handle food in a sanitary way. Could be an issue with the local manager.

I had this even longer, more detailed reply written about the nuances of eating in restaurants and fast food places when you're a vegetarian or vegan, but I figured no one wanted to read a wall of text (yet I still managed to write one). 😆

The bottom line is that Taco Bell is probably the most vegetarian and vegan friendly large fast food chain and they are extremely transparent about the ingredients in all of their menu items, including all of their sauces. They even have a section of their menu which is certified vegetarian by the American Vegetarian Association.

It's unusually easy to make almost any menu item vegetarian or vegan by swapping or omitting an ingredient or two. We get CHOICES! Lots of them! And PROTEIN! And more than just a side salad or some steamed vegetables! Frankly, it's glorious. 🙌😆

While every vegetarian or vegan has a different comfort level as far as how their food is prepared, the only way to be 100% sure that your food will never contain any animal products whatsoever is to grow and prepare your own food, which is only possible if you live in a warm climate year-round, have the land and knowledge to grow sufficient amounts of food, and are physically capable of doing so. Even all but the strictest of vegans (who won't even eat foods like broccoli because of how they are generally pollinated) believe in avoiding animal products to the extent that it is *practicable*.

I'm the strictest vegetarian I know, in that I adopt many vegan "rules", such as not eating insect ingredients or gelatin, and even I'm 100% comfortable eating at Taco Bell. Occasionally, I'll receive my order prepared with meat instead of beans, but I'm used to checking my food before I leave and it's easy to instantly tell if it's been made wrong and get it corrected. When you almost always have to modify the ingredients in your order, you get used to checking your food every time and it just becomes part of your routine when you get take out.

There are very few fast food places that I can even eat at and very few menu items I can even eat at any of those places (let alone non-side dishes), which is why Taco Bell is such a favorite for vegans and vegetarians. It's crazy, what's in some menu items. I mean, McDonald's puts meat in their fries. Who would expect that!?
Agree with you 100% as a vegetarian myself. When I'm on a long road trip in the middle of nowhere, finding taco bell is probably the only available option for vegetarian food.

This is a scam to get people going to the store more often.
I stopped eating at taco bell when they removed the $1 beef burrito.
It's only a scam if it's deceptive. Are you *likely* to buy an additional item or two to make your purchase filling enough to be an entire meal? Sure, and they know that. But are any additional purchases required to use the pass? Not at all.

If you use your pass three or four times, you've already made the purchase price back in product, and then some. And that's assuming there won't be a way to get it for $5, as there has been in the past. If that happens, passholders may begin receiving more food than they paid for on only the second visit.

This deal is certainly a value if you eat taco bell at least afew times per month. When Taco bell temporarily removed potatoes from the menu during the pandemic, As a vegetarian, I started preparing some of the items at home and it's been great. It's super simple and quick to make Mexican Pizza, Bean and cheese burritos and veggie Tacos at home.
You just need Tostadas, tortillas, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, a can of refried beans, Mexican 3 cheese blend, left over hot sauce packets from Taco bell to make most recipes. Just assemble and throw them in the air fryer.

Other toppings such as pickled jalapeños, sour cream, roasted veggies (any type of peppers, zucchini etc) are optional and add unique taste to the recipes.

Ever since I started making them at home, I stopped craving going to Taco bell. Cooking at home gives me control over the quality of the ingredients and portion sizes. But this deal is still excellent value if you don't enjoy a bit of cooking and cleaning.

I only got it for one month in January but we were spoiled cause many of us were able to use a MI zip code and got it for only $5.00! If it's on the way when you do errands or really close, that makes it more worth it. I don't drive as much anymore, once or twice a week max (gasoline is expensive). If you can break even with 3-4 visits, seems worth it. TU and Repped!
I imagine this $5 "hack" doesn't work anymore?

I wouldn't trust fast food places if I was vegetarian.
Taco bell has a lot of vegan options too, they don't contain any meat at all, of course, that also means a lot of their menu is meatless too. One man's trash is another's treasure.

FYI. I'm not sure why, but for certain stores last time it was only $5/month even though all the other stores around it were $10, so I always chose that store to buy it from, and I could then use it at any store around me/on the way to work. It might have been a bug, but for $10, 2 months straight of about 40 doritos los locos tacos supreme is not bad. There are 3 on my way to work.
