Unusual to see one this large without a number pad. I prefer to use one but not all of my laptops have it. Looks like a very good value.

Weight is not bad for this size. Most 15-inch models are heavier.
16:10 is a plus, 300 nits with 100% sRGB.
PD ad DP out.
16GB RAM.
1080p. webcam.
I see nothing this really needs out of the box. Could it benefit from a RAM upgrade? Maybe to help future proof, but not really necessary.

Good post! I would consider this a solid mid-level deal, but I am not the maestro here. TU.

Just FYI! Dell got rid of their mid level 15" and 17" and went to the 16". Also, Dell's lower end 3000 models doesn't have a backlit keyboard so you'll have to spend $300 more to get this model to have that feature. The trackpad on this and the 5620 are huge so while typing your mouse can jump to different places if you're not careful. Yes they removed the number pad. The reason why is they wanted the trackpad to be centered and with the number pad it wasn't. I still prefer the number pad especially with BitLocker being turned on, on every machine. It's a nightmare to type the key in without a number pad.
The biggest thing I hate with this machine is it has a digitizer but isn't a 2-in-1 so why have glass over the screen. It's brighter but has a bad glare if you're using it anywhere where there's light. They make screens with the touch function built in, which makes it easier to repair. So, if the screen gets broken on this model, it will be very expensive to fix. The weight isn't bad but I still think the 5515 (model before this one) was a lot better machine and so far I haven't been a big fan of the 16" models.

Yes, it is a pretty decent mid-level laptop. Also, apart from the internals, the whole laptop is made of aluminum alloy and as per the reviews, very high quality and sturdy with strong lid. Regarding the Ram upgrade, 16GB is more than enough for most use cases for this kind of laptop but if you need more, good thing is unlike the partial or completely soldered Ram trend, both slots are upgradable here and you can go up to 64GB.

Do any of the current Dell Inspiron 16" Touch Laptops still have the number pads?

I got a Dell Inspiron 5700U 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD a year and a half ago that I'm happy with that has a number pad. I was going to buy this newer one as a backup until I saw this post on the missing number pad. Thanks in advance for any responses?

Yes, I think all of the 15.6 laptops do. The new 16s do not. I have had Surface devices and prefer the squarer type screen with centered track pad. The numpad laptops offset the trackpad to the left to center with the keyboard but my OCD makes me feel Crooked when I use them.

It's funny for several years I have begged Dell for this form factor and hope it works well. There are still lots of folks who need numkeys. The engineers must think the world had gone insane.

I will say if they keep this design and keep it upgradeable I will be able to buy a new laptop every year considering it's a this is 1/3 the price of my Surface Books.

Mine gets here tommarow we shall see on quality.

Anybody have any luck getting CS to remove the $25 charge for onsite after remote service? Looks like it's included in the original price.

That's irrelevant for most of us that work indoors. I've had a 300-nits laptop for a while and even had no issues working outdoors as long as I'm not in direct sunlight.

Why would you want to remove onsite service? Want to have to ship your laptop if there's an issue with the product? I for one actually prefer Dell's onsite service over some other OEMs such as Lenovo which require you mail the laptop to them

my samsungs qled display would blow this models display out of the water which i only paid $550 (not comparing with the remaining specs)

Maybe but not everyone needs a display like that. I personally have a Samsung 4K Chromebook for media consumption and need the 16" form factor as it is great for productivity. This is a well built machine with an aluminum chassis that beats a lot of other competitors hands down on the productivity scale. I know there are many others like me that also care about being productive. Most importantly, the screen is nothing to balk at and will get the job done unless you're into graphics design, etc. in which case look elsewhere

Also, deliberately not including the remaining specs doesn't really lend itself to a fair comparson imo.

It is really a wash. I am a red guy so I may be a bit biased. Since this uses dual channel ram it helps graphics tremendously. Both will do day-to-day tasks, no problem. IMHO

Can someone comment on the difference between this model and the Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (with an Intel 12th gen i7)? I know this isn't a 2-in-1 but besides that and the AMD vs Intel difference, anything else that stands out in one vs the other?

Almost similar with exact same build, keyboard and touchpad. However, the 2-in-1 version I think, has a bigger 80 WHr+ battery.
