It's because the vertuo line was made to be proprietary (no other competitors because the pods have to have a registered barcode). Nespresso did this intentionally which is why they practically give the machines away. They know you'll have to come to them for the pods, which they very rarely discount.
They made the mistake of not making the original line proprietary, so we get the benefit of other manufacturers likes Peets, Starbucks, L'or, etc. This keeps the prices substantially lower for us consumers.

The Original Line machines and capsule were both proprietary upon their creation in the 1970's. At one time, over 1,000 patents protecting products, process, manufacturing, etc. of the OL machines and capsules. Nespresso vigorously went after anyone attempting to sell 3rd party capsules.
Their patents started expiring (or negated in court) in 2011-ish, that is when the 3rd party capsules (and unlicensed machines) began to appear. That is also when Nespresso decided to come out with a new line that could have be patented and under their control.
The same will happen with Vertuo pods, around 2030.
I personally like it. I have a cousin who is in the coffee business. All of his coffee are crazy sour. I can't take it.

Remember how expensive KCups were for awhile because Keurig's patent meant that it had a monopoly for years.
It's true. I used to work there. Vertuo launched in 2013. Patent should go well into the 2030s if not later

Crema isn't something that is a sign of quality, really. It's what espresso noobies focus on because they don't know any better (yet)
Chasing crema is what noobs do when they start down the espresso rabbit hole. It's nothing to focus on.
