Same on the alert! What a great deal on a solid entry level scope that I really can't justify right now... please stop, slickdeals!

Siglent is definitely a value-for-money option. I'd noticed a few years back where Keysight had started creating some nice offers in the education space for entry-level oscilloscopes, but they simply don't have to try as hard as their competitors. So many modern oscilloscopes from even basic brands (also see Rigol) are simply incredible devices well beyond the needs of an average hobbyist. Everyone sets their own needs/budget and honestly for me I've never beat the value and need for much beyond my old Analog Discovery 2 that I grabbed at a sub-$200 education discount way back when...

Good luck!
Jon
After watching a 15 minute tutorial on this device I still have no idea what it does.
Yep, I did this to mine. Keep in mind it's a 1GSa/s scope (500MSa/s if you use 3 or 4 channels) so 200mhz is pushing it a bit. You can also, um, liberate the other licensed functions pretty easily. Or you could when I bought it. Check eevblog forums to see if they fixed any of the hacks with newer firmware.

100Mhz bandwidth is too low for many digital logic related stuff, but for most analog use cases this and its feature is more than any hobbyist would ever need

I'm a software guy that took a few EE courses and I know a little on how to use a multimeter. I don't have a strong background in signal processing but I've wanted an oscilloscope for a long time. Is this over kill for electronic speed controllers, gpio, pwm stuff? I remember someone showing me an oscilloscope several years ago from a kickstarter that was small, had two probes and connected to a phone over Bluetooth to a phone. I thought these things would be super small by now. Apologies in advanced for my ignorance.

LOL.

For someone claiming to be an old timer, pretty odd you are saying voltage is lethal...

Always thinking I should add an O-scope to my toolkit. No idea what expense I should justify given no immediate need for one.

This handheld scope has been in my wishlist for quite a while, but I have no idea what would be appropriate for a tinkerer like me.

I'd look at Hantek's HDS line instead

Ggggggggggg...Google!

An oscilloscope is an instrument that graphically displays electrical signals and shows how those signals change over time. Engineers use oscilloscopes to measure electrical phenomena and quickly test, verify, and debug their circuit designs. The primary function of an oscilloscope is to measure voltage waves.

I love the web server on this thing. I have it hooked up to my LAN via wire, IP to my PC, and I have full control via m/k on a 4K monitor while I code arduino for my hobby IOT projects. I'm brand new learning, but built a guitar amp this year and learning tone design. This can also do UART decoding so you can read characters in ASCII, etc. I'm growing into it's capabilities. So far it has had everything I have needed. I just wish it's logic analyzer and waveform generator add-ons weren't so expensive. I'm probably just going to go with a USB one analyzer from ebay for ~$40 instead.

I got this scope a few years ago with Amex rewards and a discount. Ended up paying something like $50. It is a great scope even at msrp. I even brought it to work to use the ethernet port on a project. Did pretty well against scopes quadruple its price.

Most people who buy this scope will be using it to probe a SPI or I2C line.... and have no idea how bandwidth is calculated as well. So the 100Mhz is fine.

Overkill is better than not enough. But this scope would be great for that.

Has anyone ever used a scope like this for automotive diagnosis? I've been on the fence between something like this versus investing in a 4/8 channel Pico.

Dang, I don't remember the last time my Siglent alert went off. Thanks OP. Good deal, but I went with a faster 2 channel a while back and added a Hantek USB Oscilloscope for 16 ch for probing/logic.
Thanks for the tip on the digitals. I have an Analog Discovery 2 board from Digilent that's great for anything under 30 volts. This scope is tempting, but I have no immediate need.

I use scopes a lot as I'm a firmware expert. However, the real nice stuff is the stuff like that from Seleae which has a very nice interface and long memory. The software is very useful for zooming. The Seleae has sufficient bandwidth to capture high speed spi signals which is pretty much sufficient for most embedded work outside of circuit debugging which does require a nice scope such as getting quad spi signals synched. I've not looked into it but its come up that the Seleae software works on cheap analyzer hardware found on ebay, anyone know anything about that?
I got one of those Seleae knock-off logic analyzers off ebay for $10 or so many years ago, and used Sigrok to troubleshoot failing ADM-3A computer terminals and some dead commodore 64s. Worked well for an amateur except for the "probes" if you can even call them that lol. I think it capped out at about 8Mhz though? Which was sufficient for my needs.

Less and less people are going into Engineering in the US, it's all imported now...
Engineers should be driven by numbers not feelings.
https://www.ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/ns...-education

USA engineering students have been and are on a slow steady rise for basically forever. The US is a far more lucrative place for engineers than almost anywhere in the world so it attracts lots of international engineers. In addition, US companies are more willing to give good, challenging projects to younger engineers so the best want to work on the best projects and are further attracted.

To be blunt, US companies love low paid engineers who cannot quit due to green card restrictions. The green card holders are often held back a bit since many come from schools that emphasize theory rather than practice; in the US engineers do their own lab work and that's a problem for even advanced degree holders. This is slowly changing in China and India as they work to improve the programs but is expensive.

This scope? It looks decent. I disagree with the advice about salvage scopes. They are cheaper but color screens, easy recording of screens, easy transfer of data, easy remote use, etc. are worth the money. At 12.2 x 5.12 x 5.91 inches and 6.61 lbs this is easy to fit on a typical home bench.
