When we leave it unattended, one of our cats will move it up against a wall or flip it over or otherwise render it inoperable until relocated. So it would appear it won't provide stimulation for very long while not present or at least around to keep it operating.
Seems to work best when you can turn it on, leave the room and check in from time to time to be sure it's still in operating position. For $10, it's not a waste of money, but we don't use ours as much as we though we would.
