As a fireman that responds to Carbon Monoxide calls all the time, make sure you have one. Make sure it's not expired. And change the batteries. These do go bad and give off false alarms. Best thing is to replace it a year before it expires. That way, you don't have to call the FD to check levels when yours goes bad and gives off a false alarm. But of course never hesitate to call the FD if an alarm does go off. This gas is Deadly or causes bad long term health problems. These are essential. I can't comment on which one to buy. Check reviews and invest in this cheap insurance.
Man, amazon reviews are hilarious:

"Understanding that it needs a good cumulation of CO in order to trigger the alarm, I placed a clear solid plastic cover on the stove with the device in it. Then I turn on the gas without ignition until I can smell the gas at 10 feet away. It does nothing at all.Do you think we can count on it to save our lives?"

Oh buddy, the gas has to be burning to make CO
Since we're testing for invisible airborne things that kill you, most people can also fill out the following online to get a free Radon kit. This is especially important if you have a living space in the lower level of a home.
A smallish amount of radon in a bedroom downstairs basically causes the same cancers as heavy smoking. And testing is free!

Studies indicate that carbon monoxide detectors can be placed anywhere in the room. It's generally recommended to have one on every level of the home, but at minimum on levels with fuel burning appliances.

So I was gonna jump on this, particularly to have in my RV.

However, looking on amazon reviews there are several that people have had melt or catch fire. Not very good for a device to detect something like that. Afraid I am gonna have to pass even though it is a good price (might be a reason why)

Be careful with the dates on these. They have a finite lifespan of around 10 years or so before they start beeping because the detector has degraded and the whole unit needs replaced.

If your furnace is in garage or attic, do you need one in there? can carbon monoxide leak into the house through vents? can excessive amounts come out of your gas stove?

Ugh figures... I bought 3 of these last November for $13 each on Amazon when we moved into our first home with gas appliances. Life got in the way and I threw the detectors in a drawer totally forgetting about them until we had a new gas dryer installed incorrectly which resulted in a small gas leak in the laundry room. Just plugged all 3 units in.

So far they seem to be working fine... if fine is not going off at all. Hopefully that is a good sign.

At this price I may get a couple more for the kid's bedrooms. Never hurts to have as quick of notification as possible if needed.
