If you don't know how to size hiking boots, be careful on the sizing. You often wear thicker socks when hiking, and your feet shift more on steep inclines and rough terrain.

Several years ago I bought a pair of Keens. The first day I wore them was great, because we were hiking uphill into camp. The second day was terrible and painful, because we were hiking out. Going downhill with a full pack, my big toe was sliding and hitting the front of the boot. I probably should have bought something a half size up from my daily slip ons.

Otherwise, I'm a big fan of REI gear.

And consider changing out the insoles. This provides added comfort, and will always have an improved heel cup. Essentially your feet will not be sliding around everywhere.

They look cheap from a manufacturing standpoint. They are also unusually heavy for mostly being plastic knit. It must be the rubber coating on the upper.

I personally would prefer leather in the upper instead of just plastic. I'd take the Columbia Crestwood/Redmond or Merrell Moab any day over these.

The claimed MSRP is ludicrous for a boot made from such poor materials.

It looks like there are quite a few reviews regarding fitment and comfort issues.

For the price, they may be worth trying, but I will pass.

It is a common issues. Feet can swell up a half size to one size during long many hikes. I use different size socks, shoe inserts and boot lacing techniques and sometimes moleskins.

Have these boots and still trying to break it in. Fit is good (1/2 size above typical shoe size) but the tongue hits your ankles. It's pretty painful. It feels like something solid is on it and keeps rubbing your ankles. Not sure if I should return since I've already used it for about 8 miles trying to break it in. Appears to be a common problem based on reviews on site.

I read a review that mentioned ankle problems. That combined with other reviews (had to find objective ones) prompted me to cancel my order. It seems like using recycled plastic and being around 99% polyester upper, algae-based midsole (wtf?), and a USDA certified insole is a selling point for these shoes. Probably not a lot of breaking-in, conforming to your feet, and heating could be an issues with use. Makes me think a lot of the positive reviews are a little skewed for... reasons.

These are great. I've had them for a couple years now and they are fantastic. Water resistant and would buy again in a heartbeat at this price.

Do yourself a favor and just wear trail runners. All the work trying to keep you're feet from getting wet, when a pair of Altra's will get wet and just dry while hiking. Also a lot lighter, means less tired legs.

At 45$, hard to say no to a waterproof hiking boot from REI. If you're a member, it's free-shipping, otherwise you have to add >5$ to your cart.
