If you don't know how to size hiking boots, be careful on the sizing. You often wear thicker socks when hiking, and your feet shift more on steep inclines and rough terrain.

Several years ago I bought a pair of Keens. The first day I wore them was great, because we were hiking uphill into camp. The second day was terrible and painful, because we were hiking out. Going downhill with a full pack, my big toe was sliding and hitting the front of the boot. I probably should have bought something a half size up from my daily slip ons.

Otherwise, I'm a big fan of REI gear.
And consider changing out the insoles. This provides added comfort, and will always have an improved heel cup. Essentially your feet will not be sliding around everywhere.
They look cheap from a manufacturing standpoint. They are also unusually heavy for mostly being plastic knit. It must be the rubber coating on the upper.

I personally would prefer leather in the upper instead of just plastic. I'd take the Columbia Crestwood/Redmond or Merrell Moab any day over these.

The claimed MSRP is ludicrous for a boot made from such poor materials.

Do yourself a favor and just wear trail runners. All the work trying to keep you're feet from getting wet, when a pair of Altra's will get wet and just dry while hiking. Also a lot lighter, means less tired legs.

At 45$, hard to say no to a waterproof hiking boot from REI. If you're a member, it's free-shipping, otherwise you have to add >5$ to your cart.

In for a pair, will update with my thoughts.

I had a pair of these for testing and these were my biggest takeaways:

- I found them very lightweight and soft, feeling more like a high-top sneaker than a standard waterproof hiking boot
- They did not hold up to a waterproofing test in the shower, one of them soaked through
- Ultimately I didn't keep them because the toe-box was too narrow and pressed in on my smaller toes (a problem I have with many boots and shoes)

All that said I think they're a nice boot and worth this price if you can live with the above.

Altras have a lot of down sides. Low or no heel drop. No ankle support. And you'd really rather have waterproofing in early spring or fall.

I'd rather have full boots in most circumstances.

Is there one you recommend?

There's a lot of options available, but I use Superfeet (orange and blue).

I'm testing the Sole cork insoles. Can't really recommend them yet, but so far so good. I'm worried about long term durability.

I have the same toe box issue. My go to where Keen but they changed something and the soles start peeling off in less than a month now. What would you recommend?

Buying 3 pairs - one for each of my wife and two daughters.
They have never had hiking boots and even after multiple trips to RMNP, Yellowstone, & Glacier it took this summer's trip to Utah to finally make them want to try boots rather than running shoes.
At $45 a pair it's worth trying them.

Just wish they had my size. I'm typically an 11.5, sometimes an 11. Afraid 12 might be a bit large. That said I've had a pair of REI boots for years that have held up great as well as some waterproof Merrell hiking shoes so not sure I need them.

Agreed, I had a similar experience in the Sierras. Only now have my big toenails returned back to normal. Afterwards, I learned that big toe nails can even fall off from downhill boot stress if not careful.

My $0.02

- get a properly sized boot, with some wiggle room in the toe box
- lace the boots snugly for downhill hikes, to eliminate/minimize sliding and slamming your big toe to the front of the boot

Someone else mentioned better fitting insoles...but I'll add the heel locks for the laces is a critical feature for me if I'm doing any sort of aggressive terrain. Or at least the loop that set lower to pull your foot in. This one sort of has that loop, but it looks pretty minimal for support. I'm a big fan of REI branded gear...it's pretty cool to watch them get feedback and evolve the product. These boots look fine for some casual hiking.

I took everyone's advice and took a half size to size up from mine. It fits pretty well with my wool hiking socks.

Been walking around town with it and it's been pretty comfortable. As long as your socks are high enough, the shoe won't dig into your ankles.
