I bought the 5w when the 15w was also on sale. $108 BT. arrived the other day. it's a good amp. you will need a reverb pedal unless you prefer dry.

Not a fan of any practice only amp. Sorry.

If you need an amp head then get an amp head. Combo's are slick deals.

Could you save $100 more instead, for the 15W with 12" speaker sound and EQ and effects loop; when it goes back on sale+15% off?

Does a 12" cabinet, Celestion 12" speaker bargain, an EQ pedal, reverb and adding your own effects loop etc... cost less than $100 more?

The 15W weighs as much as my 5th grader! Some people like smaller amps for practice.

The 5W Monoprice is a clone of the classic Fender Champ circuit, one of the most used amps in recording studios. FWIW, Julian Lage uses a Fender Champ as his amp for live gigs too, so you could use it for practice, recording, or gigging (if you mic the speaker) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCcmvK8oOFk ... In any case, it a very good sounding and versatile amp circuit, and I have been very happy with this Monoprice version for the past year or so (despite owning amps that cost many times its price).

Not entirely accurate. The 5W is a clone of the Laney Cub 8, which itself is also not a clone, but more like Laney's take on the Champ. That's not saying a whole lot though because the Champ is a very simple circuit.

FWIW, I've owned both the 5W and a 1980 Vibro Champ and the Vibro Champ is just… better. In every way. Even without the vibrato. That's probably a little unfair because the Jupiter 8SC I added is half the cost of the Monoprice but it is what it is. I bought the 5W to scratch the itch but in the end I should've just gotten the real deal from the get go.

Still, if you're just looking for something to mess around with or give to a kid for a Christmas present you can't go wrong with this amp. It's going to sound better than any solid state amp Fender is offering in the $100 price range. Just be sure to break in the speaker for a couple of hours; it's not great but it does open up a little after wearing it in.

Enjoy it if you want. If you gave me one I'd like it.

I was saying in terms of what a new user might buy. And I think we should not buy to try; but generally research and go try products first; if we can.

I do not think a Fender Champ, or Laney version was great either.

Some people still think a super low price has to be crap. Same folks think expensive equals quality and resell value and that is no guarantee; by far.

Some people are collectors of gear and they may admit it. If you want it for a toy then go for it.

Value includes looking at price per value of your working dollar and what combination of gear is included. An amp combo is known to be the best way; usually. How many do you need?

But which one? I do not think the MP 15W combo is too big or heavy and stands exemplary as a great combo amp, great value, better repairable and also portable.

You see the problem with just mic'ing up practice only amps is we don't really need a practice amp at all; to do those things. What about having the same 12" Celestion speaker for practice as you use for gigging? It does not have to be mic'ed up and you do not have to hope; that where you play has any gear and good gear for you to borrow. Is that not the real purpose of a combo? Live use and then all the rest too?

Plus tube amps are interesting. The amp in the 15W is a great one. Used Katana 100 MkII combo is great too. Pros and con differences.

The problem with giving gifts; that wouldn't work well for you, means they may not work well for the recipient either. In fact; the good gift part is offset by the bad. That is less good gift giving. And we should give folks what they deserve. Including nothing sometimes. Not unforgiving or with a bad attitude mind you; but at the same time, promoting only good. Truly good.

I note that multi effects are not always less expensive in a combo and there are great $39 effects pedals that pack in a lot of value and work very well with tube amps.. Keeping complexity at bay too. Not perfect or every option ever; but most of them.
