Brand new costs $100 and refurbish costs $70. Why to take risk for $30?

I bought a Geeksquad refurb 980 (non pro) for the same price back in Feb and have had zero issues. I think this is a better route to take vs buying a new offbrand SSD for the same price.

Ie. I'd take this over the Team group SSD deals.

The 980 is $65 (non pro)... What's the difference between the two?
The 970 has 1GB of lpddr5 dram. This helps performance and makes it a better drive than the 980 which is dram-less.

What risk? I'm pretty sure most of these get returned because people think they were going to work in the PS5.

On a serious note, how badly have refurbs been used? TBW? What did they do to refurb? What was wrong in the first place?
You'll have no way of knowing until you get the drive. After you install the drive, run Samsung magician or Crystal Disk. Return the drive if you don't like what you see.

Theres a defect with them thats only been recently brought to light sadly. They are still a gold standard, but expect quite a lot of RMAs with that batch Frown I still use a 970 Evo and 850 evo (so far from what ive seen its only the 970 evo plus and beyond) and the 870 Sata based ones that have this specific defect in the NAND. It was first reported with a decent amount of detail about a month ago, and if you actually use the Samsung magician software or one of those it does help to keep track. Its something to just be known about, and the more people know about the potential issue the better!
Interesting, I'm still using an 840 Evo that I got in 2015 and it's still kicking so I just assumed Samsung still has the best reliability. I've been using a 970 Evo Plus in my other laptop since end of last year and it seems to also be working fine... Now I'm paranoid with the 970 Evo Plus randomly crashing with all files becoming corrupt...

I went with the 980 non pro last time and it had very low usage (less than 1 day)
my thinking was the 980 non pro is actually their newest drive and most likely returned because of being Gen 3 and not PS5 compatible. The 980 pro has been around awhile I would be hesitant to get one of those refurbished. My old PC still has the 256gb 970 in it from 2018 and still works perfectly.

Yes you would need some form of USB portable drive to do the switch.

There are many disc cloning software that will create an image of your existing drive to a usb drive and restore it to your new m.2 drive.
Myself I like to start with a fresh windows install on the new drive and reinstall the stuff I really use. Then I put the old drive in an USB enclosure to get anything off the old drive I might still need.

980 is slow in comparison to the 970 plus as it has no dram.
