2) The M2 isn't that much better than the M1.
3) The only noticeable improvement expected in the new model is an improved display.
4) Not only will the new models NOT be discounted 20-30% they'll probably come with a price bump.
5) If the new models are really that much better you have until Jan 31st to return these.
6) Apple giveth and Apple taketh away. What if the new model scraps the 12.9" size or drops USB-C, or forces you to subscribe to a satellite internet service or commits some other hate crime against their user base? The old models will become impossible to find and you'll be stuck. This is locking in an option.

Whenever I buy these types of items, I always get these overly ambitious ideas in my head, like I'm going to use it to get my life organized, learn a new skill, start a YouTube channel, etc. and then I end up doing exactly none of those things and never need that much space.
However, if this time I actually do get my life together and use it for meaningful "work" outside of browsing/streaming, I can always upgrade in the future. Maybe won't get the same price, but I think this plan works for me.
