In case BF produces better deals, this is good to know (from Walmart product webpage): "This item's return window has been extended for the holidays and is eligible for return until Jan 31, 2023"

Acer bought them in the 2000s and released a few products until the early 2010s. Now they are leasing the brand to Walmart to sell as a Walmart in-house brand. Acer also doesn't design or manufacture these Gateway laptops, some ODM in China does that and stick the Gateway logo on it with the permission of Acer.

It is highly likely that Acer does not do the subcontracting. Walmart does that. Gateway is now exclusive to Walmart. You won't find them at Bestbuy or sold by Amazon.com.

Per the gatewayusa site for this model: "The GWNR71517 uses 8GB LPDDR4X RAM. The RAM can not be upgraded because it is built in to the motherboard. The door on the back of the laptop with two screws is used for installing a SATA SSD up to 1 TB. "

Keyboard not backlit. Decent processor (~2019, 4 core 8 thread midlevel processor). Not sure about the brand, I've heard gateway was sold as a brand to a foreign company.

I've bought a couple of Gateways over the last 2 years and have been happy with them. Just ordered the one posted by OP as well. Hope that helps.

Do they have backlit keyboards? Do you know if the RAM is upgradable?

I'm not sure about the keyboard on the one in this post. The models I purchased previously do not have backlit keyboards. I do not know if the RAM is upgradable, sorry.

Yeah, I was perusing the other thread and came across that. The lack of backlighting and no avenue to upgrade ram kill the deal imo. 8GB is already tight on Windows. As for Gateway, from what I've read it's apparently a zombie brand being used by Acer? Although idk why they'd bother. It makes more sense as a Chinese brand being peddled by Walmart, similar to Motile. Either way, customer support seems nonexistent and QA seems hit and miss so buyer beware.

According to Arstechnica, Acer owns Gateway but subcontracts manufacturing to evoo.

I have no experience with this notebook. But I've been recommending off lease Elitebooks to friends with kids for years. They're built way better than a typical budget notebook so they deal with kid handling and abuse way better.

Do you have a recommended site to buy from? Our 4 year old Asus died and I really don't want to spend much to replace it.

Gateway is now a bargain basement brand, like what Westinghouse became for TV's. Still more likely that not that it will do what it's intended to do, but build quality and customer support will be minimal.

If you're close to a Walmart, check out their displays. The Gateways have a very cheap feel to them. But if that's not important, then they are some of the better dollar/spec computers out there.

This same one was Front Page about 6 or 7 weeks ago at $299. I wish the memory was upgradeable, but 8GB will handle most of what my grandkids will use it for. I'm a little nervous about build-quality of these licensed Gateways built by a Chinese manufacturer, but China seems to show up in just about every consumer product these days.

Genuine question: what are the kids doing that a Chromebook cant handle it?
