That's 100% environmental.

In the right environments GoreTex and similar vapor permeable membranes keep liquid out while still allowing vapor to escape, allowing the wearer to stay comfortable and dry.

In the wrong environments, it does exactly what you say, and it's not much different than a plastic bag with a much higher price tag.

The breathability is dependent on a humidity differential. GT will always keep water out, but it will only "breathe" if the humidity outside of the membrane is less than inside.

So if you're wearing GT clothing (say a jacket) somewhere that's humid/constantly rainy, you may as well just get a non breathable shell for half the price and accept that you're probably going to be sweaty under it.

But if you're somewhere generally dry but you you experience intermittent hits of water... Say hiking somewhere not humid but crossing a creek... A pair of GT boots will work perfectly and keep the water out while also letting the moisture (aka sweat) out to keep your feet drier than traditional waterproof footwear.

A lot of GoreTex "magic" (and similar products) IS nothing more than hype... But if you understand how it actually works and tailor it's use to those scenarios, it does exactly what it advertises.

Coincidentally I just bought first pair of GT boots last week because I recently moved somewhere that, while generally dry, does get snow and flash rain. I've been wearing them all week to test out fit and feel in high 70s weather with winter socks, and they've kept my feel comfortably dry.

I'm expecting them to perform exactly as needed when it snows here and I don't want it soaking through.

Great price. I've had these for half a year. Nice boots, comfortable, good grip. But on my pair, the Gore-Tex waterproofing didn't last more than 3 months.

Good to know! I've been debating returning these $60 Moab 3's due to lack of waterproofing.

I didn't purchase these for the waterproofing, but I've been using my pair for bucking trees at our land. They have been holding up great after a years' worth falling pine. Great grip on the soles and no signs of failure, yet.

Any experience with the cushioning level on these? Trying to find a pair with the plush.

I purposefully chose the $60 non waterproof boots because as much as the waterproofing keeps water out, it also keeps moisture in. I also don't hike through rivers or creeks so that's a personal choice.

Yep the same reason why I went with Moab3 instead

Also good to know, thank you. I don't plan to hike through water either so thanks for reinforcing the decision to keep them 😉

Wolverine is known for their workboots. As luck would have it....

Try your luck and see if anything in there works for you. I bought BLVD sneakers last month...

Danner, I've owned 3 pairs and loved all of them. Try on multiple styles though to find the one that fits you. The problem with Danner is finding anywhere that carries a decent selection. Alternatively Red Wing shoes is more natioanlly known.

For Danner I highly recommend the Viciuos or Striker (side zip was where it's at, I'm not sure they still make that though). I also have a pair of the Crater Rim and while it's US made and I wish it was my favorite, the Vicious to me fits better. They have lots of options though and you won't regret it.

Red Wings. I've got 3 pairs since 2015. 1 USA made steel toe that's as solid as the day I bought them. 1 Chinese made Composite toe that has extra wide toe box. I wear those mostly for comfort but the material is definitely breaking down much faster. And a pair of Iron Rangers that I hope to own the rest of my life.
