Since this is asked so much:
Pixel 6a is not available for trade in because it's new and Google still sells them.

My last two phone upgrades I did through them taking advantage of the high trade-in value, and you get the discount instantly. Used it going from S20 Ultra to S21 Ultra, then also trading a S21 Ultra to get a S22 Ultra.
They send you the new phone. You then have a few weeks to a month to send back your trade-in phone. If you do not send it in then they charge you the credit, or if you send something completely different than what you claimed, they will charge you the difference between what you sent and what you claimed.
Even when ordering a $1300 phone with $950-$1000 credit and discounts they trust the customers enough to send them a brand spanking new phone on the "honor system". There is no reason that Google cannot do this, they just choose not to.

You may receive the Trade-In Credit (if any) in the following form:
a credit to your original form of payment;
a store or service credit for usage on the Websites;
a Google Play credit; or
any combination of the above methods

How does Google decide how to give us the trade-in value credit? I definitely do NOT want $550 in close to useless Google Play or store credit.
Can someone with experience with prior deals clarify? Thanks.
