I bet half the people complaining about soldered RAM don't even know how to change the RAM in a computer. 🙄

Isn't 16GB enough?

Lenovo sure makes some odd laptops. Decent CPU. Good ram. But soldered. No touch screen and thunderbolt. I saw an other one with strong cpu and gpu. But low storage and ram. Both soldered. Why do they make desirable machines. But make sure it has unfixable flaws.

Tell me, which OS can you run with that today?

Not true. 11 runs just fine with 8 gig. 99.9% of people would be perfectly happy with a Chromebook. A few browser session. Maybe word excel and outlook. People are so obsessed with ram. The single most important thing to a good experience on a pc now is fast storage. SSD's even sata ones have cured that. M2 NVE has made it better still. Sure 16gig gives a little breathing room. But the vast majority of users don't need it. Heck unless I want to spin up a VM or two I don't need it. And no I am not talking to gamers. They need everything they can fry

Gates was short sighted. RAM needs have been static for years. Most people need a few browser windows, word and excel. 16 gig is more than enough. Are you running autocad. Or photoshop. Sure more ram is needed. Maybe you want to spin up some VM's. Yes. More ram js required. But you are talking to people that will do fine with 8 gig. 16 is great. Telling the average user to invest in more than 16 gig is folly. And you know as well as I do that toy don't by tech for your projected needs 2 years from now. Better tech will
Be available then for less money.

They landed a man on the moon with 4k. K. Not Meg. Not gig. Todays software is pure inefficient bloat. But even it runs just fine on 16gig

i got few small spreadsheets open, and browsers open, with a few tabs. Right now Windows is using 20GB of ram.
Not sure what to tell you. Memory leak? Do you even know what that means? Perhaps reboot once in awhile. Windows isn't Linux.

I have found that additional RAM and an SSD make a machine far more useful than a fast CPU. It doesn't take clock cycles to have two dozen Chrome tabs open - it takes RAM.
Single biggest plus for a machine is SSD. Storage was the bottleneck for years.

I wholeheartedly agree that storage has historically been the bottleneck. SSDs have rejuvenated a number of older workstation-class machines for me.

However, with a bit more RAM available, the OS won't have to resort to paging to disk nearly as much. That does benefit performance somewhat.

I think solid-state storage is primary for a good experience, and RAM is secondary. Together they complement each other.

I'm not saying RAM is not important. I'm just saying that having extra doesn't get you very far. Some people just think that more is better. But it's diminishing returns. 8 gig is fine for the vast majority of users. 16 is better. But after that most people we see almost no benefit. Sure some heavy users will. But it will do nothing for the Average user. And is just wasteful

you do realize most people intend to keep their laptop for a few years?
8GB is not enough today. Yes, most people would be "happy", b/c they don't know any better.
16GB is enough today, but most people keep their laptop for over 3 years. By then, 16GB will be just like 8GB today.
Again, I am running a few programs and it's already using 20GB TODAY.

Did I tell people to buy 32GB today? I simply said soldered ram, pass. I have intention to UPGRADE in 2 yr time to 32GB.
You once again failed to see where I say I run spreadsheet and browser, and used up 20GB already.

of course it's inefficient bloat, but when RAM is cheap, there's no reason to waste time optimizing the code. What's the point of spending millions just to optimize it for 4k ram when you got 16GB sticks are going for $40?

LOL. that tells me all I needed to know about your knowledge level.
Hint, memory is meant to be used. It is actually BEST if the system uses up the entire available ram. That means the system will not waste time going back to storage all the time.
