You'd have to be a runner and serious enough in the culture to know what these are. These are the absolute top of the line racing shoes with carbon fiber plates inserted in the sole. They are used by many professionals to set record paces. As others have said they don't last for many miles so they would most likely be used once or twice before a race and then on race day.
So long story short, you may be old, but no one is buying these for looks or to walk around in. These types of shoes are for serious racers and can easily be priced over $200 per pair so this is a very slick deal.
You must be a young man who wants to be old. A true old man could care less what his shoes look like, as long as they're comfortable, and would care even less what you think about them. In fact, if they make young men like you cringe, he would probably be even more likely to wear them just to get a laugh from your reaction.
