This i7 may not be anything special. According to cpu benchmark it is ranked lower than Intel Core i5-1240P.

Agreed i7-1260p is nothing special but it is certainly better than the i5-1240p. There are several reviews out there which show that. Here is one thorough one -

Don't just blindly look at selective benchmarks, but still here it shows that i7 beats i5 in most of them-

Now whether it's worth paying extra for depends on how much more it is and one's use case.

That's what concerns me with thin laptops+ 12th-gen Intel chips. There's no way to undervolt them, right? A lot of power is being stuffed into a lightweight chassis.

Yah physics can't lie. These simply don't have enough cooling power to cool latest processor.

I am not blindly looking at anything.
cpubenchmark is a reliable source and has been around for a very long time (benchmark based) while notebookcheck.net on the other hand is mostly spec sheet comparison and in the past had lots of hit/miss info

To say that the i7-1260P is "certainly" better than the i5-1240P is not so easy.

In certain aspects the i5 is better while the i7 is better in others.
I only posted the info so people are aware - it is not a night/day difference between the two, but more of a close competition.

Where there is a clear difference is the IGPU, i7 has better-integrated graphics (might be important for people who do editing/rendering)

TBH the comparison in this case does not even matter I just mentioned it so that people are aware - it is not like we have the option of customizing the laptop and have a price/performance difference...
Overall, while it might be more than I am willing to pay it seems like a decent package...

I would go by one or 2 review. Performance depends on how the laptop is designed. Many are thermally constrained for laptop to perform at his peak. Anyway at this price this is still a good deal though there was a 899 deal little while ago.

Yes it does (though that it is quite a bit more). SSD is user upgradable and in fact there is an empty nvme slot to add a second ssd.

I think $899 deal was for the i5 with 8GB RAM.
