Benchmade is well-respected and you do pay a bit for the name, but it earns that with excellent materials, service, technology, and workmanship (quality control being their main issue). IMO it's among the best (for the money) along with Boker, Emerson, and Zero Tolerance. The Griptilian line is well-established (released in 2001) and shines at almost everything. The Axis locks are superb and it's fast, light and smooth; and there's a lot of choice in materials for the blade and the scales.

With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

Kinda like saying if you're buying $200k cars you should learn take care of them yourself. You're not wrong, it's just not helpful and a bit out of touch.

What makes this knife worth $110? I see that it's made in the US, which is nice, but otherwise I'm a bit confused.
People pay for what they perceive as value on things. Some people get snobbish about brands and features just like any other hobby/interest.

People will wax eloquant about steel quality and workmanship and reliability and on and on and on about the stuff. I personally edc a bunch of different kershaw folders that are always at least 1/3 the price of Benchmade and I have zero issues with them.

I'm a commercial fisherman and bought a benchmade several years ago. It is the best knife I've ever bought. It's held up great in the salt, and stays sharper quite a bit longer than other knives. It's laughable when people compare these to cheaper knives.

Good deal especially since benchmade pricing is going to go up again. $100 is not that expensive compared to a lot of knives that are out there. That being said there are amazing knives available for less. I think they are going to sell a lot less than they think when they increase prices. Your brand name can only take you so far before it's just not worth it anymore.

What makes a phone worth $1,200? What makes a car worth $60,000?

As another somewhat-budget option, I got a sencut sachse a couple weeks ago. Seriously one of my new favorites, button lock, for around 40. Just another budget option fyi.

Chinese premium knives have caught up and can be very good...BUT, if you look at such options with comparable quality of design, machining tolerances, steel, heat treatment, customer service, and more...they aren't much lower in price, and then you're supporting foreign companies and workers.

The American companies also leverage a high degree of experience that goes a long way at this level of performance. Experience with things like steel heat treatments, which can take a VERY long time and a lot of money to dial in for example, can make a notable difference in performance with the exact same steel used, so not all M390 or S35VN will perform the same. Experience with things like thoughtful categorical design, ergonomics, and customer service options like fast turn around sharpening and repair are also relevant.

There is a reason they can ask these prices and people pay them.

Yes, those are both valid questions when there are other phones/cars that will do the job for a lot less money.

Same with the knife question. The answer lies with what you value in the process of getting the job done.

Right, and I'm trying to learn more about knives so I asked the experts in this thread what makes this knife worth it. I didn't realize so many people would be offended by a simple question.

20CV is considered higher quality and more expensive steel than S30V

People tend to get defensive about their hobbies or anything they're passionate about when somebody asks a question like "why would you spend THAT much on [X]??".

As an example. Some women spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on purses when a simple plastic tote would do the job just as well. And if you ask them "what makes a Gucci purse worth $1,000?" you'll probably get a very similar reaction.

If you're buying $100+ knives, I suggest you learn to care for the metals and sharpen them yourself.

This isn't a sports car or iPhone.
It's a knife.
Presumably someone who gets this will have use for it.

However, what I find almost comical is there are people willing to spend this kind of money on a knife who don't have enough experience with knives to sharpen it themselves.
Not having to sharpen it yourself is part of the value of a Benchmade. The skill and equipment to do the quality sharpening job Benchmade offers free, will cost you more time and money than free.

I do think it's worthwhile for regular knife users and enthusiasts to sharpen their own, regardless of the steel. But I wouldn't laugh at someone for getting a great knife that doesn't require it.

How does this compare to the Benchmade Bugout that I bought here a few years ago? I carry it everyday and it's a great knife. It hasn't been sharpened yet and I don't necessarily feel an immediate need. If and when they need arises I will likely mail it to benchmade for sharpening.
