With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

People will wax eloquant about steel quality and workmanship and reliability and on and on and on about the stuff. I personally edc a bunch of different kershaw folders that are always at least 1/3 the price of Benchmade and I have zero issues with them.

The American companies also leverage a high degree of experience that goes a long way at this level of performance. Experience with things like steel heat treatments, which can take a VERY long time and a lot of money to dial in for example, can make a notable difference in performance with the exact same steel used, so not all M390 or S35VN will perform the same. Experience with things like thoughtful categorical design, ergonomics, and customer service options like fast turn around sharpening and repair are also relevant.
There is a reason they can ask these prices and people pay them.

As an example. Some women spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on purses when a simple plastic tote would do the job just as well. And if you ask them "what makes a Gucci purse worth $1,000?" you'll probably get a very similar reaction.
It's a knife.
Presumably someone who gets this will have use for it.
However, what I find almost comical is there are people willing to spend this kind of money on a knife who don't have enough experience with knives to sharpen it themselves.
I do think it's worthwhile for regular knife users and enthusiasts to sharpen their own, regardless of the steel. But I wouldn't laugh at someone for getting a great knife that doesn't require it.
