Benchmade is well-respected and you do pay a bit for the name, but it earns that with excellent materials, service, technology, and workmanship (quality control being their main issue). IMO it's among the best (for the money) along with Boker, Emerson, and Zero Tolerance. The Griptilian line is well-established (released in 2001) and shines at almost everything. The Axis locks are superb and it's fast, light and smooth; and there's a lot of choice in materials for the blade and the scales.

With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

Kinda like saying if you're buying $200k cars you should learn take care of them yourself. You're not wrong, it's just not helpful and a bit out of touch.

Brokies always complaining lol. They'll forever buy cheap garbage and replace it 10x in their lifetime instead of buying something nice one time

How does this compare to the Benchmade Bugout that I bought here a few years ago? I carry it everyday and it's a great knife. It hasn't been sharpened yet and I don't necessarily feel an immediate need. If and when they need arises I will likely mail it to benchmade for sharpening.
I used to carry Griptilians and Mini Griptilians daily. Still own them. I switched to a full-size Bugout because of the lower weight. The Bugout doesn't have a full-length liner, so it's less sturdy and less rigid than the Griptilian. Also, I find the Griptilian easier to flick open than the Bugout because the Bugout's thumb stud is a bit close to the hinge.

This is another good reason why I don't personally buy Benchmade or other imo overpriced folders - don't have to worry about losing them with edc use.
...Except that's not a reason to not buy them; that's your reason to not EDC them.

will i actually notice a difference in everyday useage over a similar specd $25 Kershaw? I'm not a sleepwalker but neither am I a princess.
After EDC and usage opening/breaking down boxes, my Kershaws require sharpening every month or two. I've also EDCd my Benchmade for about 2 or 3 years and haven't had to sharpen it once.

One thing to add about Benchmade knives. As someone who uses pocket knives a lot, I've found these to be in the top of the list for left and right handed people.

I'm fairly ambidextrous as I have to be, but most knives are specifically designed for right handed use, which makes sense since there are more right-haned people.

Due to the axis lock Benchmade uses there is no difference opening, closing, locking up the blade with the right or left hand. And it's super easy to switch the pocket clip to the other side, which is true for most pocket knives.

Just thought I'd say this because it was a cool surprise for me when I bought the griptillian about 10 years ago. 😉

If I owned a 200k car I would still trust the expert to handle some things.

Love my grips, but the full size is just too much for the office, and weekend duty falls to my PM2 …

Personally, I think the G10 grips are a more elegant design for premium steels versus the standard design …

The only time I ever "lost" a knife was with the original Spyderco's where the handle and clip were all molded Zytel. I think it just did not grip your pocket well enough. Both times it made it back to me though.

I'm not sure about your identity crisis. That sounds like something you may want to talk to someone about.

As for knives, a $25 Kershaw does not have similar specs, and you will notice a difference with this, everyday. In my experience it is worth the premium to avoid things like struggling with a dull knife or having to sharpen it every 147 hours, having to polish out rust spots or wipe it down with a diaper and gun oil after ever use, worrying about a lock failure that could land me in the ER, or being ashamed every time I pull it because it was made by commies.

I spent $250 on a Microtech UTX85 in M390. I'm not flexing, I'm just highlighting a point. The edge retention is outstanding and the blade is essentially rust proof. I've had it 6 months, use it constantly, have never had a single blemish, and can still LITERALLY shave with it. The lock has never malfunctioned...you can beat it with a 2x4 and it won't fail, and if it did, an OTF wont cut my finger off, and Microtech would repair it and send it back no questions asked. I take pride when using it knowing it was built by and it's purchase supports, fellow Americans.

Is it 10 times as good as a $25 Kershaw? Well, value is context dependent. It is to me.

The downvotes are surprising. I'm not sure the comment was out of touch. Actually, I don't think it went far enough. I think it's absurd for anyone to buy a knife they plan to carry and use daily constantly without teaching themselves how to maintain it. It really isn't the same as maintaining an expensive vehicle...it's much less involved, much less time consuming, and much less expensive.

I have one of these and I really don't understand what the big deal about them is and why they cost so much. It seems to me that a lot of the people defending the ridiculous prices that Benchmade charges, might not actually own any of the knives that they say are worth the cost. I have never owned any knives that lose their edge quicker than the mini griptillian that I have.

Yah due to my job I can't really clip the knife to my slacks. So I just let them freely chill in my pockets which is most likely the reason why I lose them. So I just carry my cheaper knives now.
