With the flight cancellation/delay situation going on, it's very easy to need to make adjustments to your hotel stay. Prepay sites like Expedia offer zero flexibility so a 20% savings could cause you to lose much more. It's a gamble and YMMV.

Source: me who got screwed by Expedia when my flight was cancelled last minute and I couldn't reach my destination for 2 days.

Quote from SuperSport346 :
After using Expedia for years, I ran into this situation this spring. Flight was delayed to the next day. Chatted with Expedia and tried to get them to cancel the hotel and they canceled my entire trip instead. Well, everything except the hotel that I wasn't going to make it to. They tried to say they couldn't contact the hotel because they were "closed", and when I called the hotel they told me I needed to cancel through Expedia.

Expedia reps were absolutely useless and I refuse to use them ever again - even for the points I have accumulated.
I am not sure how much the hotel can do about this if you booked directly with them. They still need at least one day to cancel.

The best you can do is using a credit card with trip cancellation insurance.

Save yourself from future madness by booking directly, instead of via expedia.
This is good advice. Expedia is awful. Their support is nonexistent. There is usually no difference in price. And you don't get any status benefits for hotels/car rentals through them.

Hard pass.

Except in this case, where there is a price difference....20%. I normally book direct, and understand the benefits to doing so, but I'd book through a 3rd party to saved myself $150. I'm Hilton Diamond, and Marriott Platinum, and pretty underwhelmed by their "status benefits" At most, I'll get an "upgrade" to a room that doesn't face the parking lot, a higher floor, or a free/discounted breakfast. I'd gladly give those up to save 20%.

I ended up using Priceline. They had competitive rates using their Express Deals (they pick between Avis, Hertz, National). Paired that with a 10% coupon you get for signing up with a new email. And there is 6-7%CB if you Google it. Paired that with a CSR CC that gets 3x points per travel and I felt it was a solid deal in this market.

You taking a huge risk with pre-paid. Always book direct through hotel site or use amex travel to get the points boost (depends on your card)

I tried to have them price match priceline, sent them the screenshot and everything, and they are making all the excuses not to honor it. Company with poor customer service... Anyone have experience successfully price matching?
