I have been watching these specific pliers for a while. The lowest price they have been in a year according to a popular price tracking website is $27.77 in February of 2022. They have been lower over the years but I doubt we will see that again. I love the brand and have slowly been building my collection. As of this post there are 22,545 reviews with a 5 star rating.

I think it's just an old school term that stuck. In automotive applications they were handy for holding the hub of a water pump while removing a fan or pulley, or removing the packing nut for repairing a leaky seal, etc. It's not the right tool for the job, but back in the old days water pump rebuilding was a common task and sometimes had to be done in the field, and commonly with farm equipment. I think it's more of a catch-all tool.
Why are none of the pictures showing them being used on water pumps?
I'm going to be completely honest with you. I know what water pumps are in general, but I can't imagine how they'd have specialized pliers. I'm really struggling to understand why these are specifically 'water pump pliers'.

Don't worry, they won't explode if they are used on things other than water pumps. That's just what this style of pliers is often called.

I have a bunch of these and I don't think I've ever used them on a water pump.

I don't know, 5" seems too small. 6" seems like a better idea, even though it's only 1" longer.

5" is good for edc kit but has not rubberized handles. 6" does.

I have the Knipex mini pliers wrench in 5 inch that I paid $46 for months ago. I carry them daily in a sheath made for a 110 Buck knife. They are very handy to have. So these listed pliers are a little different but I believe they would still come in very handy for every day carry. You could always Plastidip the handles if you wanted to or wrap them in hockey tape or something similar for a little better grip.

They are called water pump plies not because of their purpose but because the hinge mechanism resembles an old fashioned water pump. Or so I'm told...

It's the 4" that don't have rubber handles. The 5" do. I believe the wrong picture is shown above. At least according to the listing and the 4" pliers I've purchased.

5 inch are tiny. Good for carrying on bike. But 7.25 inch size is the most useful if you only want to buy 1.

I believe it's named as such more because of the handle design with angled head, long arms and high leverage. It's less about the intended use.
