Prices need to come down more, because 13th gen is the better deal.

13600k $330 + $140 B660= $470 its faster than the 7700x, and you get to choose between keeping your existing DDR4 (free) or going with DDR5 (same cost as AMD). Z690 is also only $150+ these days and will offer you better VRM, features and I/O than AM5 B650.

Plus Asrock has been making trash tier motherboards again. They are literally the worst vendor you could choose in the last few years.

People are really overstating the performance gains of 13th Gen Intel over Zen 4. It's mostly single-digit leads, some trading blows, with a few synthetic outliers. Zen 4 (7700X) still takes many gaming victories (if you care about that). The power consumption of a 13th gen system carries a cost as well. How much depends on use case, but it could easily make up the cost difference depending on your location.

Which platform you buy is going to come down almost exclusively to how frequently you upgrade (2 years vs 10 years) and what you're upgrading from (12th gen, 6th gen, Zen 1, Zen 3, Bulldozer?)

You're not going to be disappointed with either platform.

Thanks for sharing!

Any cons going with this combo? Folks are telling me to avoid ASRock, BIOS updates tend to remove/break features such as WOLAN. Tia!

I'm waiting for a Asus B650 deal myself. There is an Asus TUF x670 deal there that's $100 off but it's really pcie5 in difference.

These combos are getting more and more tempting. Waiting until closer to BF though, don't need a new build just yet unless the deal is amazing.

Interesting... shame no reviews are up for these boards yet. Been wanting to see the VRM analysis before committing to one of them.

The ASRock B650E PG RIPTIDE is one of the cheapest B650 boards to have a PCIe 5.0 GPU slot.

Which z690 do you recommend on a budget? I'm worried about flashing the bios for the 13th gen. Thanks for the good post!

Only reason I'd recommend the 7000 series over 13th Gen is the potential upgrade path, if you use your pc primarily for gaming.

People on AM4 get to drop in 5800x3D and be set for another 5 years on motherboards they already own, while people like me that are on 8th Gen Intel have to buy a new CPU/Motherboard. Really wish intel would stay on LGA sockets a little longer than jumping to the next every 2 generations.

But I say potential since I think it's still TBD if the current AM5 boards will support the 8000 series and beyond.

It's kinda a bad time to upgrade it feels for people who are primarily gaming.

Had a horrible warranty experience this year with AsRock and never got a replacement so I have a dead board and out $`170... Tried to contact via email/phone support and no response. Guess which brand I am not purchasing for my next build.... Go with Asus, gigabyte, or MSI....

CPU generation support is guaranteed until the end of 2025, so yes the 8000 series will be supported. AMD themselves probably hasn't determined yet if they need a new socket for the 9000 series or if they want to keep the 2 year cadence, so they weren't willing to commit beyond 2025.

While Intel's CPUs are more performant, for anyone building a new system from scratch I think AM5 is still the better option. The combo $70-100 rebate negates nearly all of the price difference and I don't care for the extra 150W sustained power draw of the 13700K over the 7700X.

None of you need all of this power. Sandybridge would serve you fine.

I'm looking to get a 13700k soon. Recommendations on a Z690 ATX motherboard? I've used Gigabyte Aorus in the past for two builds but I've read their Z690's are garbage and some recalled. Asus over MSI?

Also, price target on 13700k? $350? The one thing keeping me from committing fully to 13700k is the power draw. I have 1600W PSU but I don't want the heat.

AMD has said they would support AM5 for at least 4 generations of processors
