This is a beast of almost 50 pounds with a pretty narrow gear range. It lacks proper gearing for doing real uphills. If you plan to use it for mountain biking, this isn't a good option at all. It's fine for dirt, sand, snow, and just putting around town. Pretty poor option for commuting though as it's very heavy and has high rolling resistance.
SMH, remember many years ago when Mongoose used to be one of the baddest-ass BMX bikes around.
🤔 you mean sold out to corporate greed and capitalism?

Just my $.02........ I actually owned this bike about 5 years ago. Rode it (yep, I'm one of those 48 year old peeps who mostly rode it in town) until the tires went bald. LOVED IT! I sold it for $75.00 in about 5 minutes when the tires went bald and I was too lazy to get new tires. I've regretted it ever since. I don't know why, but riding this very heavy, Mongoose Dolomite fat tire bicycle just makes me smile. And, I love the little things in life that make me smile. For under $200.00, I'd buy 2!! Anyway, if you're looking for a high quality, light weight fat tire bike, you are going to be very, very disappointed. But, if you're looking for something SIMPLE that you don't have to STRESS about getting stolen and can just have fun with, BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY!!! And just enjoy the smiles!!!!! Smilie Smilie Smilie Also, THANK YOU OP NAVY-WIFE!!!!!! Smilie Smilie (I only bought one today. But I wanted to buy TWO!! LOL)

What?? I ride the beaches often on my fat tire bike and there is no comparison with my 2 mt bikes (hardtail and fully, both Marin). Best you actually ride one before you embarrass yourself with posting nonsense. Fad? LOL...they have been around for 20+ years.
You must not have read my entire post. I do 50+ mile night rides from Palos Verdes to Santa Monica Pier and back. Fat tires bog into the sand like any other bike tire. In fact the two times I've went down was avoiding drunkards having to go off the path and onto the sand.

And yess, a fad.

an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object's qualities; a craze.

Yes, if you know how pedal assist works in stages. On my bike speed is religated to one of five pre sets with resistance being consistent to the top speed. I have the first setting at 10mph. As I pedal constantly I'm working against that pedal assist for resistance, constant resistance. Ebikes are not just for people who want to throttle around.
Maybe educate yourself a little more on benifits of an ebike VS the fad mentality of opinion on them. They have been around well over 20 years.

Slickdeals would be completely irrelevant and this bike would probably cost $1000 without "evil" capitalism…
I didn't say evil capitalism. I was just removing the china copout from the previous statement. Makes it too easy the let the people here who are responsible keep making shitty decisions when it is just kind of blanket dumped on "china" or "India" or whoever. Did I over compensate?

Besides looking silly, do the fat tires serve any practical purpose?

On a good bike, yes, they are awesome for riding in snow, but this bike doesn't have the necessary gearing for that. The big tires are mainly just for show, "Look at me, I'm riding a monster bike!"

And they're expensive. When you damage or wear out a tire be prepared for a huge replacement cost.

I prefer fat tire ebikes, every single one of my ebikes is a fat bike except one.
Compared to a normal tire bike or a skinny tire bike they're like riding on a cloud so smooth.

I just would never want to pedal a fat bike. Doesn't make any sense to me without some type of motor.

Kids I have this and took it to a trail and my friend took his 5000 dollar trek bike. At the end of the day the mongoose was just scratched and dirty and my friend trek needed 1000 dollars in repairs. See it as a muscle car.

Go rent one at a beach and you will see they work well in the sand. I ride Tahoe area a lot and see fat tire bikes often. Damn forgiving on roots, baby heads, deep gravel. Fun for sure.

I've always been confused about these fat tire bikes. Are they a fad? I see people using them in the city. Are they buying them for the snow??? I can see people using them at the beach...but everywhere else it just seems like they buy them to look cool.
I wouldn't say a fad. But it's basically single purpose. You could go on a trail, or mud, or even on sand but the pavement most fat tire bikes are designed for is flat hard (paved, concrete or asphalt) surface and usually for no more than 10 miles. Because these bikes exist for one thing: comfort. The fat tires inflated to low PSI provide a cushion that even the softly suspensioned bikes can't match. And unlike suspension, the tires will not bottom out unless in a most extreme circumstance. So fat tire bikes are just another iteration of the beach cruisers, except with... fat tires. But with a more aggressive geometry and riding position, you can get a spirited riding on it from time to time. But the weight and the rolling resistance from the tires will make these a chore to ride in most climbs and over long distance.

If I lived in a relatively flat city with a lot of bike paths, I'd be tempted to get one, especially one that's paired with some kind of electric motor, but for now, I'd rather get a gravel or purpose-made touring bike for my n+1 bike.
