Typical no-name Chinese garbage that falls apart, and apparently smells bad:

And does not reach 190 degrees.

I'm using a $9 Walmart kettle I bought a decade ago. The damned thing refuses to die.

I've gone through 3 electric kettles because they develop a weird fishy smell over time. I think it's the materials used

I believe the weird fishy smell is from the filter at the spout. depending on your water quality, it can build bacteria pretty quickly.

I bought this same model for a little more at Macy's. So far I like it. Boils water for my morning tea/coffee within 2-3 minutes. No complaints so far

Is the top plastic and does it come in contact with boiling water?

NYTimes Wirecutter did a teardown of the models they tested. Everything is made the same way, it appeared, and the only differences were bells and whistles (temp. control) and reported failure rates (quality assurance, perhaps). Don't expect yours to be different.

One word: extremophile.

Bacteria will be the only living thing left on Earth after the oceans have boiled off in about 1.2 billion years.

I'm from Canada, and we know our kettles. Many millions of tea drinkers.

I'd wait for this fast-boil one to get down to $16, which occurs from time to time per Keepa:
