I have this model and it can easily overheat when watching 4k broadcast without an HDMI extension.
I have seen this mentioned before. I have one plugged directly into a 140 watts per channel Onkyo receiver that doubles as a space heater and have never had this problem.

Googled what reasons to buy a streaming stick if I have a console and the main one is to save energy costs. How much is the cost of a Playstation to run really? How long would it take me to break even on the purchase?

I just need something to plug my USB flash drives into that can play mkv files with DTS audio. Will this let me do that? Don't need streaming features or anything.
Lon.TV [youtube.com] was able add USB flash drive and Ethernet to the Roku Express 4K+ (2021) via a USB OTG hub + Ethernet. The Express 4K+ was was $25 earlier this month, making this poor men's Ultra setup less than $40 which is great if you don't need the fancier features of the Roku Ultra (Pro remote control, 2GB RAM vs 1GB, Dolby Vision and Atmos). I have no idea what file formats the Express 4K+ or Ultra support, and Roku could disable (or enhance) this feature over time via software so there is some uncertainty.

Probably not too long if you watch a lot of TV. The Roku sticks use about 3.5-5 watts of power, whereas a PS5 uses 68-70watts to stream Netflix or Prime. Xbox series s uses around 35, and I'm not sure about the series X, but I think it's 50-60.
Someone with better Math skills can probably chime in and give you a better estimate on how long it would take to recoup the $25.

Completely unrelated, but my Roku stick has been having pausing issues with Netflix. All the other apps work fine, but Netflix pauses every 30-60 seconds on its own. I've logged out, deleted the app, reinstalled and logged back in...no help. Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? The stick is a 2020 or 2021 model.

But are you running 4k on it? I can tell you that even with the latest roku sw update, it did not fix the overheating issue and the control continues to lag. The HDMI extension helps a little bit.

Someone told me rather than delete and reinstall, to hit the asterisk and check for updates. I did this on Prime and Netflix and both quit crashing on multiple tvs.

Yup, watched about 4 hours of 4K content nonstop last night on my new Sony OLED via the Roku.

Get a Walmart $20 Google tv for more for less!
Roku is just a joke!
It's actually Android TV, but basically the same as newer Google TV. The model for $20 is called Onn Android TV 4K.

Yes I'm also curious as to the difference between the 3820R2 directly from Roku vs the 3820R from Target/BestBuy . . . is it the wireless technology that is better in the R2 version?
I had a painstakingly long chat with Roku on this (it was terrible) and finally found out that the only difference between the 3820R and 3820R2 is who is selling it. Roku only sells the R2. Other retailers sell the R. Hope that helps.
