The air outlet is next to the inlet tube, it blows on you or at what you're vacuuming. Trust me, there's no easy way to avoid this. Suction is worse than a cheap plug-in Walmart Hart one. And there's no rotation at the end of the hose, it's annoying to use. (Mainly used to vacuum out my Jeep and it consistently pisses me off)
It's worked when needed, battery life is good, but I'm always annoyed and frustrated when I use it. My wife hates it, with a passion. I absolutely would avoid this one.
Cordless vacs under $200, are rarely, if ever, decent. Many over $400 aren't very good either.
I feel like we will need quantum teleportation before we get a good cordless vac.

Spot-on review. I have the 581 cordless/corded and it's pretty awful- literally the worst Dewalt tool I own. Only thing it does well is convenience.
On the larger but fairly cheap side, the Ryobi 6 gal with wheels is really not bad; sells for about $120 w/o battery, but there are often promo deals that will bundle a battery/charger (like, who doesn't already have Ryobi 18V something hanging around). It's not "packable" in the sense of the DeWalt or the Milwaukee, but it's good for rolling around a basement or out to a car in a driveway, without needing to string an extension cord for a quick cleaning. A benefit of that one is that you can use a regular vac hose, not limited to the tiny ones on the portables.
