I was about to buy one of these last year then got convinced to look into some of the digital pen soldering irons. In picked up a ts80 clone from sequire and have been happy since

Unfamiliar with the TS80, what model Sequire do you like?

I'm tempted to get this, since I couldn't grab a HD clearance near me

This is a very solid desktop soldering iron. I would consider picking up some additional tips of various sizes (Digikey for legit products, scAmazon if you don't care about counterfeits).

If you prefer smaller irons, check out the Pinecil iron. You'll need to get a powerful enough USB AC adapter/battery pack for it, but how many soldering irons can you run from a battery pack? Exactly.

Both have their places. If you don't do that much and most of it is lighter duty, consider the Pinecil. If you have an electronics workbench that will need an iron going pretty steadily, this will pay dividends in comfort and usability.

Tempted to replace my 50W Velleman since I often need more power and would like temperature control.

That said, those portable ones are always tempting me too. Apparently the Pinecil goes to 60 watts (doesn't say on Amazon)? That would still be a small upgrade in power for me.

Don't really need a portable one as I have butane soldering irons. No idea what the watt equivalent of those are, but they struggle to solder thick gauge cables too.

How many mediocre soldering irons does a tinkerer need?

I picked up a Pinecil last year and have been happy with it for hobbyist work. Just took awhile to get here from China. The Nintendo switch power supply powers it fine.

Had this model for the last couple years, honestly one of the best irons for the price I've ever seen. I do a lot of stained glass and this is the only one that can hold its heat properly after constant use

Temperature control is absolutely worth it. You'll never look back.

Since I got my ts80 I never got another field iron lol. It's killer for anything above 14awg

Soldering stations like OP are mandatory for anything bigger than 14awg though. Specially on pcb grounds small field irons like the ts80 WORK but not as well as a workstation iron like the one posted for sure.

Thanks for posting OP. Picked one up to get back into RC and do some automotive work as well.

I need to solder 12 and 10 gauge most often. Looks like I need to Google that.
