DON'T buy from mint - best buy has the same deal and you can activate past 45 days but mint is really strict about the activation expiring after 45. You've been warned.

What do you mean? Trial isn't related to old or new customer. you simply try it with a trial-SIM card (use a burner email), then if you decide to go with them. Just buy it as this deal offers (use your real email).
I thought they might be able to tell from my IMEI or some other identifier tied to my phone.

The email is irrelevant. IMEI may be checked (not sure they do it actively anymore) but can be bypassed if you activate via website, skip it and provide your phone brand/model instead.

Mint deals cannot be added to pre-existing plans - they give you a new sim and they'll give you a new number or you can port in your NON mint number. To get around this you port your actual number you plan to keep out to google voice, then each time you get a new mint number you setup conditional forwarding to the google voice number. You have to set up conditional forwarding each time you get a new mint number, but now you can get the new customer deals without changing your number. Also you DON't have to setup conditional forwarding, google voice allows you to place calls/texts over any data connection, its just nice having your phone calls actually go thru the carriers voice network when you maybe don't have fast data speeds.
If I port my real number to GV and someone calls my real number does that use Mint's carrier or GV's VOIP service?

It can use one or the other. If you setup conditional forwarding then the call will go thru the carrier service traditional voice - it will even go thru your carriers wifi calling as well. If you DO NOT setup forwarding then it will go thru gv VOIP (data/wifi based). You can test it out for free by creating setting up a voice number now and forwarding to the number assigned to you - if you like it then you can port your real number over afterward.

I already have a GV number. But I don't understand how my real number would be able to use Mint's carrier?

If someone calls the new Mint number it gets forwarded to my real number. But if someone calls my real number how would that use Mint's service? Wouldn't that use Google's?

No, nobody calls the number that is assigned to the sim. Think of it like this - when everything is setup correctly your google voice number whether you take the number from google or port in your number to google voice is the gateway to all of your devices that have the google voice app installed/computer web browser/ or phone lines setup with forwarding.

Just try it now if you have a cellphone that is on an active plan. Install the app, add your phone number in the setup, and then do the code for conditional call forwarding (google how for your current carrier). For testing purposes, turn off wifi and mobile data on your cellphone, then with somebody elses phone, call the google voice number and your phone should ring if you have everything setup correctly.

Also - when somebody calls the number assigned to your sim from your carrier, it will only ring your cellphone, so it doesn't get disabled. The point tho is to give everyone your google number.

Its the CONDITIONAL CALL FORWARDING that links the number from google to the carrier number. Make sure you have this setup or you will only get calls via your data connection and the app will need to be installed. You have to have the app installed anyway to receive text messages. You used to be able to forward text message as well but GV discontinued that because I believe there was an issue with the carriers.

I see so it's some kind of reverse forwarding thing that google does. I'll definitely consider doing this when my plan runs out soon. Thx for the explanation.

Yeah. I initially got hooked because they were offering "free" visual voicemail when the carriers weren't offering visual mail or charged like crazy for it. Also you could manage your voicemail in an email app like setting on pc browser instead of the old fashioned way of dialing in. Its pretty awesome once you have it setup correctly.

I say "free" because I'm sure they were probably doing something with that data.
