There's a bunch of SRAM stuff on sale on Amazon at this point, I just grabbed this, the GX shifter, a GX chain and an NX cassette (10-50, way cheaper than the GX) for just over $200. That's super cheap to upgrade a drivetrain.
ahh...i have all 105 components...must not buy anything as no need

I just ran the numbers and WWC would be $1 cheaper after my 5% back from Amazon.... But take a week to ship. $1 savings vs. delivered Friday.... hummm.
Amazon only lowers prices to beat competitors. If you don't also support the competitors, Amazon will maximally exploit you when the competitor dies off. When all else is roughly equal, I support the shop actually engaged in the sport.

How many of us will/can replace this on our own?
It's very easy. You'll end up spending about $50-100 to get some bike tools, but then you can swap cassettes, adjust derailleurs, and change out bearings.

Anyone looking at this should at least consider the Microshift wide range cassettes. You get a little less refinement, but a more robust chain that requires less derailleur adjustment. That makes a lot of sense on a mountain bike.

It's actually pretty easy. A bike multitool and youtube instruction to help will do it.

Easy with a chain whip and a cassette wrench. Those are included in most basic bike tool kits. But yeah, spend $50 to get the tools to install yourself.

Damn, a very specific, low to mid-grade derailleur at maybe $10 off it's average price.

You never know when a rock will smash your derailleur. Happened to a friend of mine 2 weeks ago. Split it right down the middle. Luckily I had a backup and we continued our day trip in Brevard.
Hey. So I'm in Melbourne. Where in Brevard are you?

This actually happened to me in one of the very first rides on a new Stumpjumpers! As I was riding on an easy path, the SLX rear derailleur snapped, like 10 minutes into the ride. The bikes were just a week old. Took them to the LBS, a Specialized dealer, and waited for the warranty fix. That was in May. The replacement part only arrived in September!

Luckily the store where I bought it from (which was in a different state, 250 miles away, I live in New England), were efficient enough to find and ship me a replacement part from a store in CO, so I was up and riding in 3-4 weeks instead of some 5 months.

Once the replacement part arrived from Shimano, I just kept it in the bag as a spare if anything like this happens again.
