These are more for a small environment and TBH you're probably not gonna get any true Atmos immersion from these.
To use these properly the receiver is going to cost much more. You should spend most of your budget on the speakers.

Also, Atmos can be great but if you have high or sloped ceilings, it doesn't work as well as with standard height flat ceilings.
These are actually designed to bounce sound off the ceiling. They work best with standard 6-8ft flat ceilings. Up firing atmos speakers will add some volume/height with vaulted ceilings, but you will not get that positional bounce.
this deal not as good as the above deal
this tech has been mastered at 5.1 7.1 9.X etc
atmos is a scam to try to get people to upgrade their already excellent speakers
With that said, I actually agree that at this point I'd probably focus on a putting the money into a good 5.1 setup vs. the extra Atmos. These speakers probably marginal unless you have a standard 8' ceiling room, and the subwoofer won't hit the lows that, for me, provide enough immersion. It's all cost vs. benefit though. I'd make sure my receiver supported Atmos and 8k for future-proofing (there are budget options that meet this requirement now, the Yamaha TSR-700 comes to mind), and I think the sweet spot is a few hundred $ more in investment in speakers, but you can definitely get into cost creep in this hobby.
To expand on this, I too and finishing my basement. Also a very large open area with open ceilings (no drywall). Will these upfiring speakers still work with an open ceiling (exposed beams, pumping, electrical etc)

No not really, ideally the ceiling should be a flat smooth surface and 8-12ft in height.
I would suggest just skipping an"Atmos" setup and just build a good 5.1 setup.
A good 5.1 setup can easily perform as good if not better than these entry level/alternative "Atmos" setups.
You would need a good one anyways to make "Atmos" worthwhile IMO.

And if you have the budget for it a svs sub for around $500 you would have a good start to your home theater setup, and you can just get a used AVR receiver to save money. You can get high end ones for $100-200 since you don't need Atmos on the secondhand market. Heck I got lucky and found an Atmos 7.2 Integra DRX 4 for only $100 on marketplace, running it as 5.1.2. People upgrade them and sell thier old one cheap sometimes.
