Once you have the 12700K, you'll be able to give QuickSync a try as well.
FYI I had flip a setting in BIOS to have the iGPU show up along side my graphics card. Then In Windows I had to use the System -> Display -> Graphics interface to force programs to the use the iGPU. This was in Win11 but I think it's also in recent Win10.

Would this be a good fan/heat sink for the combo?
https://www.microcenter.com/produ...air-cooler

I ended up getting a 750w psu and an opened box 6700xt.

I'd consider if it was ddr5. Im upgrading a 7 year old system, so might as well spend a touch more for the better components
Or realize your are getting a massive jump in performance and wouldn't notice the difference. Odd to be happy with 7 year old system yet require bleeding edge to upgrade.

Am considering buying a gaming desktop in near future for my 10yo son and I and was leaning towards that Costco $1k BF deal. Also think it would be a fun thing to build one together but am not very good at picking parts. What would be a good rig built around this set? It would also serve as my general computer for bills/browse/etc.

He's looking to upgrade so doubt he's happy with his 7 year old system. I do agree however that you won't notice much of a difference between DDR4 vs DDR5 in many applications or games.

Worth upgrade over 8700k? I'm not sure how much I tax mine.

I had a 3700x in my first build. I finally upgraded to a 5800x, slight performance increase in gaming.

Here's a video comparing the 3700x and the 12700K in a variety of games [youtube.com].
There are several more videos out there comparing the two. I'd let those decide for you.
Should've went for the 5800x3d. Now that's an upgrade that keeps up with Raptor Lake. (If your GPU can keep up hehe.)

this or the I5-13600k for using on davinci resolve if money isn't an issue?
If money isn't an issue and you're using multithreaded software like davinci, you should be looking at the 13900K or 7950x.

Double the cores, double the cache, double the performance. If you're here, then you're looking to upgrade, this is a solid choice for the price; a 13700k would be even better but you're looking at paying more for that CPU alone than this combo here.

So, I actually decided to do a little more of a test. I re-encoded the same Top Gun movie I mentioned. It took 18 minutes with the NVENC. Using the same exact settings (as close as possible) using CPU software encoding, it took 3hrs with the 3700x at 100% load most of that time. Visually, I do not see any difference in the quality. However, you were correct, the file size for the CPU Software encode was significantly smaller. It came in around 6.3GB instead of 10.4GB. Is that enough of a space savings to justify 2.6 extra hours (3hrs vs 20 minutes) of my computer being sluggish due to the CPU load? That's debatable.

I am doing this 12700K upgrade and I'll compare again times once the build is done and tweaked. I will be waiting a short time to build because I need Noctua to send my the 1700 mounting kit (for free). I expect it might take 2 weeks to get that based on when I had them send me the AM4 kit 3 years ago.
I'm a crazy movie freak and have encoded my large bluray/ultraHD collection. I went with a 13900K for that instead of using my 3090 for NVENC for this reason. The quality is similar and NVENC is faster even the 13900K, but the file size increase is almost double and too hard to bear when hard drives are forever expensive.
