Closest Microcenter to me is about 4 hours away. I cry myself to sleep every time I see awesome deals at their store. I plan to make a field trip there some day.

Hello, is this a kf variant CPU and does this have igpu? I'm confused and new at this
also is this an upgrade from a thread ripper 1950x
I bought it and I have 1950x. For anything single core like gaming is this will be much faster, if you are using for multi core jobs like rendering etc it will be about the same.

Almost twice as fast single core so things such as gaming will be much better.

Good deal finally on a 12th Gen i7 combo!
Debate whether to finally upgrade my AM4 setup (3700x). Pretty large jump, but do I really need it?
Look at the eBay values for that 3700x and motherboard. It might make the upgrade even less than You're expecting

Worth upgrade over 8700k? I'm not sure how much I tax mine.
I upgraded from 8700, I think for this price it worths. You can sell your old 8700k for $100 on ebay.

The most important upgrade to me:

1. PCIE 3.0 to PCIE 5.0
2. Integrated WIFI card which can save a PCI slot. Now I can put 3~4 slots oversized graphic cards.
3. Double the performance

Am considering buying a gaming desktop in near future for my 10yo son and I and was leaning towards that Costco $1k BF deal. Also think it would be a fun thing to build one together but am not very good at picking parts. What would be a good rig built around this set? It would also serve as my general computer for bills/browse/etc.

Nice, is this like a dual processor xeon setup? Which one is it? Are you compiling c++ ? Big Grin
Yeah, its dual Xeon E5 2697 v2 on a Supermicro X9DAI board with 64GB RAM (the board has 16 RAM slots and I had a boat load of 4GB DDR3 Registered laying around, so why not?)

Forgot to mention earlier.

For those wanting more SATA ports, get one of those LSI raid sas cards on ebay for $30-40 that can be flashed to IT mode. Easily 8 more ports. IIRC it requires an x8 slot.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/194910024856

This already comes preflashed and includes proper cables.
Be careful with some of those cards in regular systems... I had a set recently cause conflicts with the BIOS and 1/3 of my RAM went missing. Turns out I had to disable a couple pins on the PCIe slot with kapton tape and then it was smooth sailing.

DDR4 is a deal breaker. Why would anyone who wants a new build will do that? It's like buying a GTX 780 that's how old DDR4 is. Makes no sense for someone future proofing a new build. My last build was running strong for 7 years.
Some of us are still using DDR3 in our main rig. DDR4 is better than that.

I've been going back and forth on this to upgrade my 11600K, but I just can't justify it even though it's a great deal... the games I play are GPU-limited (6800XT) far more often than not, so I'd really just be giving myself CPU headroom for a GPU upgrade that I'm not planning for any time soon.

I'm trying my best not to let a good deal tempt me to upgrade just because I'm bored and probably enjoy building computers more than actually gaming on them...

NGL, this is a pretty sweet deal for that combo, regardless it being last gen. That must mean MC must have a lot of overstock in their inventory 😁

If the target of your build is maximizing price/performance, DDR4 is where it's at... especially if you're upgrading Very few apps, especially games, currently benefit substantially from higher memory speeds. If future-proofing is your goal, and you're building during a technological transition period, you're going to pay to do so.

Comparing a new build using this deal to the 7700X + B650 Aorus Elite AX + Free 32gb DDR5 (another Micro Center deal), you're paying ~$130 more now (which will probably be ~10% of your total build cost) for potential benefits of higher memory speeds down the road. If you're upgrading and already have DDR4 RAM, that jumps to ~$280. If you build from scratch every 7 years, maybe it's worth it, but if you're just upgrading the motherboard/CPU it's a tough pill to swallow.

My goal is to upgrade my CPU (and if necessary my motherboard/RAM) every two years, and my GPU in the year in between. On that schedule, I'll carry over my RAM (and motherboard, if possible) as often as possible unless there's a new feature I absolutely need for compatibility or immediate performance gain justified by the price... the latter of which is usually highly situational and subjective.

Just picked up this combo from Microcenter Chicago. I saw no stampede to get one. I'd been looking for a deal on the i7-12700k. If there's a better one going forward, I doubt it'll be much better. This seems like a solid offer.
I'll wait on a 3080 or 3080 Ti to complete the build that'll be in a Smithsonian some day. Doumo Arigatou Gozaitashimashita, OP.
