Maybe the CPU was $299, but the only motherboards at that time were $200+
The combo deals with free boards are usually last generation or older (like the current AMD Ryzen 3000 deals they are advertising).

You're looking for a Mini ITX board then. Unfortunately "deal" and "Mini ITX" are rarely in the same sentence - people are generally willing to pay a premium for the small form factor. I used this Asrock Mini ITX board; it's not particular feature rich, but may suffice for your needs.
