Closest Microcenter to me is about 4 hours away. I cry myself to sleep every time I see awesome deals at their store. I plan to make a field trip there some day.

Is this i7 close enough to the new i5-13600k to grab this bundle to save ~$120?
Around 5% gains in gaming benchmarks.

Unless you have a 3090 or better and you game at 1080 you would see almost no difference in most games, and even then it would be when benchmarking. So close that I doubt anyone could tell, who can tell 160 fps average from 165?

Multi core should also be almost identical.

I was expecting 80% improvement with encoding though. With Handbrake I only see 50%-75% speed improvement over the 3700x. Ah well. Its still nice to have newer HW and a fresh Windows install. Its been awhile.
All bios settings at stock/default?

Depending on your thermals, you may be able to get some OC out of the cpu which would yield improved encoding performance.

I just finished building the combo out. Amazingly, everything pretty much worked.

I used a Thermaltake PA120 SE cooler and 16GB of Gskill 3600 Cas 16 memory. I added an Intek Perf Plus M2 drive.

This replaces a 3700x on an AsRock K4 X370 MB. I'm happy to finally have a new MB as the X370 couldn't reach 3200 memory speed and had only one PCIE3x4 slot (the other was x2). My 3070Ti, Case, PS, and a few drives moved over.

I haven't gamed yet and honestly don't expect to notice any change.

wow! we're like twins. also upgrading from a 3700x. my gigabyte motherboard has been giving me constant issues over past year (will need to RMA it but can't go without a PC for weeks-to-months for the RMA). Was originally thinking of buying a cheap MB, but with such a great combo deal figured might as well upgrade. also rocking a rtx 3070 Smilie

I load Linux on this combo, Rosewill Zircon Mid Tower, 4x16gig ram, 120gb 2.5" ssd, everything is fine.
Weird thing the Roswilll case has no mobo speaker, maybe worth 50 cents only, never thought they would cut cost on that...

Stock w/ XMP enabled.

As a side note, the XMP profile would fail with DDR in the black slots. Moved to Gray ones and works fine. A little concerning should I want to go to 4 sticks at some point.

This is normal. Some motherboards want you to install in the A2-B2 slots (usually the 2nd and 4th slots - which matches with the grey slots in this board) if only using 2 RAM sticks (and it won't work if you install in A1-B1 slots). However, when using all 4 slots with 4 sticks of RAM, it works fine. This is because the some boards brands (Asus and Gigabyte most commonly) use daisy chain memory topology so the slots you use for the 2 ram set-ups can alter performance. Usually, when the brand does this, they will color code the ram slots.

Any thoughts on this deal being cheaper than finding a 12th gen i5 (don't need k to unlock) and mobo combo? This one needs a CPU cooler but the mobo does have a lot of nice options that the cheaper ones to keep the budget down. Seems like price would be very close but maybe i5 non k ends up being cheaper. I don't currently game, but not out of the question I guess.

I appreciate everyone who commented. I'll go with this deal and save some money.

Also, if anyone is looking for one in Yonkers I have a reservation I can cancel for you since I found one closer to me. Feel free to let me know

I was actually under the impression that the motherboard supports memory only up to 3200. Nice to see that 3600 is working with no issues.

It has DDR OC support of 5000+. See approved memory here [asus.com].

It's been a long while since I did an intel build.

What the current driver install sequence? On older platforms it was generally chipset (single executable file), video, then everything else.

Asus has a ton of different items listed under the chipset category (https://www.asus.com/motherboards...download/) . What order should these be done in? OS - win 11 pro.
