You can earn it through credit card spend points, but you can also earn it through other ways such as referral points for referring people to get the card and/or spending through the spending portal or spend partners. In years past, I have gotten the companion pass pretty early in the calendar year with one card's large bonus + referral points from a few people who signed up.
If you are targeting the companion pass, get the card now, but remember not to complete the full initial spend of $3,000 until late December 2022 or Jan 2023 -- and after your December billing statement closes (but still before the 3 month window from when you were approved). This is so you get the bonus in 2023. Then do other things in 2023 to get to 135,000 qualifying points, and you will have a companion pass for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024.

Points post with your statement(or a couple days after). So as long as you wait until after your December statement to finish your spend requirement, you should be fine with points posting in January.

If so, I doubt VERY seriously that will happen. Things will have to be going very wrong for them to offer that during the start of spring break. The only time they did that was when they were still struggling due to the pandemic, in early 2021. Even then, it was specific to being booked through a corporate travel portal.
Points earned during a billing cycle on a Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card from Chase are not available for redemption or qualification for Companion Pass status until they are posted on your billing statement and posted to your Rapid Rewards account. Only points posted on your billing statements and posted to your Rapid Rewards account during the same calendar year are available for qualification for Companion Pass status. For example, if you make a purchase after your December billing statement cycle date, the points on those purchases will not count toward Companion Pass status in the year the purchase was made; they will appear on your January billing statement and post to your Rapid Rewards account in January.
Also, if I apply and am approved today, would my billing cycle start/end on the 4th of the month? So to complete the minimum spend as close to Jan 1 as possible, I'd want to have a billing cycle end date as close to (but after) Jan 1 as possible, correct?

Yes, you can buy retailer gift cards, or pre-pay utilities to meet the min spend.
Correct, you want the points to hit in 2023. If you dont have a trip planned in January you shouldnt have to worry to much about them hitting early in the month, just make sure they dont hit in December.
Only option was to cancel and re-apply...
