SWA has announced that, starting in 2023, Southwest is raising the qualifying benchmark for the Companion Pass from achieving 125,000 qualifying points to 135,000 qualifying points in the same calendar year.

You can earn it through credit card spend points, but you can also earn it through other ways such as referral points for referring people to get the card and/or spending through the spending portal or spend partners. In years past, I have gotten the companion pass pretty early in the calendar year with one card's large bonus + referral points from a few people who signed up.

If you are targeting the companion pass, get the card now, but remember not to complete the full initial spend of $3,000 until late December 2022 or Jan 2023 -- and after your December billing statement closes (but still before the 3 month window from when you were approved). This is so you get the bonus in 2023. Then do other things in 2023 to get to 135,000 qualifying points, and you will have a companion pass for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024.
Yes! The best plan is the qualify to earn the companion pass in early 2023 and the CP goes the rest of the year and all of 2024!
Yes, but you should make sure both bonuses hit in early 2023 (instead of one bonus hitting in late 2022 and one hitting in early 2023)...Track your spending.

Any chances the promotion will be extended or there will be a better one after this expires on Dec. 5th?
From what I've observed, not usually in the first few months of the year. In 2022, I believe it took until late May/early June to get to a more-than-50,000 offer (it was a 75,000 offer in early June 2022).

But, who really knows?

There is still two left weeks on this deal. And if your spouse or family member has a card, it could be more than 75,000 for the two of you, if the other person gets a referral bonus on top of that.

Is it possible to expedite the card or get the card details once approved?

Yes if you call right away. 3 of our 4 cards were expedited they UPS next day air saver. 4th one we were lied about, saying FedEx will get it to you in a couple of days. I figured the bunghole rep was just lying, but who cares.

JFalc gives great advice (repped). The two business cards referred to are Preferred and Premiere.

Preferred-80k points/$5k spend $199 annual fee

Premiere-60k points/$3k spend $99 annual fee

Premiere and a personal card are all you need to get the companion pass.

Please also don't hesitate to reach out to me as well for some personal guidance on this. It's an AWESOME promotion and I want everyone to share in it.

Pretty sure the extra annual fee for the top tier cards are worth the extra miles you get.

I'm guessing this won't work but worth asking.

If you got a personal card, can you refer yourself for the business card to get referral points also?

I imagine since it'll be the same rapid rewards account, for both cards, it won't work.

You can't send a business card referral from a personal credit card (and vice versa). Besides, I'm not sure you wanna mess with referring yourself when it comes to credit card applications. I'm only speculating here, but Chase would seemingly have all the info to see that the referrer and the referree are one and the same.

If your strategy is to try to get companion pass every 2 years, I can see how going for the lower tier card makes sense. A lower annual fee and a lower spending requirement ain't nothing to sneeze at. Yes, you'll end up with 20k fewer points, but you'll still have at least 125k points to book flights with (combined with a personal card bonus). I can only speak for myself, but I never ran out of points in the past (companion pass helped with that too, of course).

2 years later, you go for another companion pass, which also means you'll reload with another 125k points.

Understand and agree, somewhat.

For my case though, this churning is a lot of effort, so I might as well go the extra proverbial mile to get the extra miles.

If my referral applies on Dec 4th or 5th, any chance those 20k points post in 2023?

Even if your statement period ended in late Dec,
IMHO, that's not going to work timing wise.

Theoretically, it could, but not practically

Applicant needs to get the card, and activate and likely spend something - - probably at least a week or more before your Dec statement period closes.

I am confused by your response. My plan is to get the card, and refer my spouse. I would want both the 75k (which I can control) and the 20k to post in 2023 so I could make a run at the companion pass in 2023. Your response seems to indicate the 20k will post in 2023, right?

Yes.

*(My mistake, I assumed you were wanting and needing the referral points in 2022)

One safer way for your spouse to ensure the result you want (a 2023 posting of your referral points), is for spouse to apply on Dec 4/Dec 5, get approved, wait and get the card a week or so later, and sit on it and not activate the card until right after your Dec statement date ends. I think that would seal it.

Agreed. However, for me, spending that much $$ is tough and the extra $2k spend to get 20k points isn't worth it for the Preferred Business over Premier Business card.

Am I correct in assuming that this "deal" and the "Dec 5th Deadline" are only related to the 3 personal cards?

And the bonus point offers for the business cards aren't impacted by the Dec 5th deadline? And one could wait and apply for the Business card even after the Dec 5th and still get the 60k/80k for the 2 business card options?

I would generally agree w that - - with the caveat that Chase can do whatever it wants in early Dec.

But 60/80 is pretty normal for those business cards

I am at 4/24 with Chase. Does that mean I can't apply both - a personal and business card? Only one is likely to get approved?
