SWA has announced that, starting in 2023, Southwest is raising the qualifying benchmark for the Companion Pass from achieving 125,000 qualifying points to 135,000 qualifying points in the same calendar year.
You can earn it through credit card spend points, but you can also earn it through other ways such as referral points for referring people to get the card and/or spending through the spending portal or spend partners. In years past, I have gotten the companion pass pretty early in the calendar year with one card's large bonus + referral points from a few people who signed up.
If you are targeting the companion pass, get the card now, but remember not to complete the full initial spend of $3,000 until late December 2022 or Jan 2023 -- and after your December billing statement closes (but still before the 3 month window from when you were approved). This is so you get the bonus in 2023. Then do other things in 2023 to get to 135,000 qualifying points, and you will have a companion pass for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024.
Yes! The best plan is the qualify to earn the companion pass in early 2023 and the CP goes the rest of the year and all of 2024!
Yes, but you should make sure both bonuses hit in early 2023 (instead of one bonus hitting in late 2022 and one hitting in early 2023)...Track your spending.

No they do not waive annual fees, but I've heard they have a lot of pull in getting you thru approval hurdles, like low scores, 5/24 and 2/30 rules breaches, etc.
On my other post, my limited abuse of Chase cards were their in house cards with 1st year free, so I'd collect bonuses and then cancel before they charged 2nd year's fee. On Co-Branded cards they may be more lenient.
sorry if I missed this but can I cancel one of the SW card, in this case, the business one so I don't incur fees before 2nd year hits since I don't need 2 cards to be opened for 2 yrs right? Also, is there any reference on SW's site that the CP is good through all of 2024?
Another question, is it ok to apply now and use it for a $1k purchase then finish the remaining by 3rd month or should I wait til Dec to start my 1st purchase ? Thank you!

Yes, you can cancel the card after you get what you want out of the card. The points, after being transferred by Chase to SWA, remain in your SWA acct no matter if you cancel the card.
If you get it through qualifying points (125, 000), the companion pass has always been good for the remainder of the calendar year you qualify in, plus the following calendar year.
So, if you qualify at the beginning of 2023, you are good through Dec 2024.
Yes, you can start your spending now and wait to complete the qualifying spend in Jan or Feb, but be sure to complete the spend within the 3 months from approval. ... Most people do that.
I got approved for business card but was denied the personal card. Same outcome after calling reconsideration line. I was told that reason for denial was that I already have a product from southwest (business card). I've cancelled the only other credit card I had with chase. Any suggestions?

Call again. There are plenty of ignorant Chase reps, like the one you talked to.
Is there a good personal SW card or just get the cheapest fee one and that's good enough?
It depends what you want from the card. The fee on the more expensive priority card is $149 but you get back a $75 travel credit and 7500 anniversary points. It can sort of pay for itself.
Are we supposed to apply for both the personal and business SW card around same time? Doesn't matter which one first I assume if that's the case? TY!
A lot of people will apply for a business card first (a) because it is harder to get approved for and (b) also supposedly for Chase '5/24 rule' reasons.

Woops I applied for the Personal one first and got approved. How long should I hold off before applying for the business card? Also, is it worth to get the performance biz card? Is the extra $100 in fees worth it to get extra 20k pts ($99 fee/60k for premier vs. $199 fee/80k for performance)? Torn right now but we have 2 kids we'll need to buy tickets for so maybe worth it after all, thoughts? Thanks!

So I applied for the business one soon after the personal but the business card needs to be reviewed further, do I need to call them and inquire or should I await their decision? This is nerve racking 😬

In my opinion, ideally, 31 days -- which is doable because Chase will likely still have the offer available for 60k or 80k bonus for the business card in 31 days (just like it does now for the two different biz cards) --- even though it won't have the 75,000 bonus point offer for the individual card 31 days from now.
Other people have done it back to back more quickly and successfully. I'd wait the 30+ days. That's just me and my approach over the years.

If it were me, I would call the business reconsideration line in a few days and ask if they need any additional info. (Within page 15 of this thread has the useful image of the reconsideration line process, but I think that image is for Individual cards, but still worth checking out).
UpgradedPoints dot com says this: "To check your personal Chase credit card application status by phone, call the application status line at 800-432-3117. For business applications, call 800-453-9719."
That is what I have done in years past when I got the 30 day notice. (Myself, I havent applied for a biz card in two years now, but, for me, it was always just verification of id/verification it wasn't fraud).

That answer doesn't make sense under the specific terms of the individual card offer -- I'd call back and ask for a better answer.
The individual card Terms say this:
75,000 Bonus Points After You Spend $3,000 On Purchases In The First 3 Months From Account Opening:
"The product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products. To qualify for your bonus points, you must make Purchases totaling $3,000 or more during the first 3 months from account opening......" As to the limitations, it specifically says: "This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products"
The only time this happened to someone I know was because she had the individual bonus already within 2 years (but hadnt realized it) . She got denied because she had the individual bonus within like 20 months of the application (which is a no-no) under the individual card terms. Double check whether it is possible that you received bonus points from a Southwest individual card within 24 months. If not, I'd call back and ask for a better answer.

What is the 2/30 rule?
2 cards max in 30 days.
