Laugh all you want. $82 for this gear is a steal, especially for someone who's on a budget and/or not sure about getting into the sport. If you love the sport, someday you'll upgrade and maybe hand this down to someone else who's interested.

Get the 9 ft 5 weight (so the 590-4):

4-Piece Crosswater 590-4 Fly Fishing Combo Kit (5WT 9') $81.99

https://sport.woot.com/offers/red...nt_wp_0_19

You seriously can't go wrong at this price (so get 2). I already have a "guest" rod I bought a while back for visitors, but this is a GREAT deal -- especially if you're starting out. You'll be able to use this rod for many, many years before you'll feel you need to upgrade.

Note that they have a lot of other fly fishing kit on sale:

https://sport.woot.com/offers/red...nt_wp_0_19

Including the Path II - Again you'd want a 5 wt 9 ft for starting out:

https://sport.woot.com/offers/pat...cnt_wp_0_3

Honestly I'd probably spend the extra $10 and get the Path II, but both are solid choices--anything under $100 for a full kit is an amazing deal.

I've used this deal about 3 weeks ago but purchased 990-4 (need it for salmon).
No problem with site at all.
I've used my Amazon prime and everything went through successfully.

Planning on replace reel on this Redington rod anyway, because one which came with it is made completely of plastic and wouldn't last for long.

Show up at your local river with the Redington setup, cheese dip bait, and 10 inch worms. Hell of a combo.

Are you saying we should use a bait and big worms with this fly combo?

This is obviously and entry level rig, but Redington is a solid company that makes good products. I use their Trout Classic rod and wading boots and am impressed at the quality and price point. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on this deal if I was getting into the sport.

If you click on the "More" link to see all the deals, it's a bunch of fly fishing gear but at the bottom there's also cheese dip catfish bait and plastic worms.

The Trout Classic is the best budget trout rod by miles IMO and its a shame they are not available in this sale. I have three weights in that rod and use it far more than my Hardy (which Im weary of taking out because its far too expensive to break). I had to warranty two of my Trout Classics and Reddington has excellent repair service (they just sent me brand new rods lol).

I dont know about the Crosswater but the Path is a decent rod. Looks like a good combo price but unfortunately I think the reel is carbon fiber which makes the combo deal a bit meh... Still, you can trust that Reddington makes a pretty good entry level budget rod.

This is a very reasonable price for a full combo with a graphite rod. I bought the Path v2 combo a few weeks ago. It casts well, and the included rod tube is very nice. The reel is mediocre, but it doesn't matter that much anyway.

Be ready to buy a new fly line though, especially if you're in a cooler climate. The combo I got had terrible line memory from being pre-spooled and I couldn't get the coils out by stretching the line (I tied the leader to a fencepost and stretched the whole line by about 3 feet) or soaking it in hot water. Maybe I just got unlucky.

If you're trying to get into fly fishing for the absolute lowest price, this is pretty much it. The cheapest alternative would be a good old yellow Eagle Claw fiberglass rod with a Martin Caddis Creek reel. That might save you a few bucks, but you wouldn't get the rod tube.

Advice on which to get?

I'd love to try fly fishing but I have ZERO experience. Any advice on which kit/size/weight(?) I should get? I may actually get 2 so I could take someone with me. Thanks. I live in the Midwest if that matters ( no saltwater for many miles!)

What part of the Midwest? The 9-foot 5wt is a very versatile rod. If you're doing mostly warm water fishing it might be a good idea to go up to the 6wt, which will make it easier to fight and land big bass.

If you're near a lot of small cold water streams and creeks, you might want to go down to the 4wt or even 3wt. A lighter rod is super fun for catching small trout.
