What's a good budget cordless alternative if you rarely use an 18 gauge nailer, but are tired of dragging around a compressor once a year or so when you do actually use the nail gun?

I would question if you actually need the 18 gauge. Either use a smaller gauge manual stapler/nailer. Use a screw or simply use a hammer and a nail.

Nah. I'll pass on the hammer. Lol. Need the 18 gauge for trim. I have a pancake compressor and nail gun that gets dragged out maybe once a year to help a friend or family do some residential trim work. Some inside. Some outside. I had my roof re-shingled recently. Had to repair the failing fascia moulding around my entire house. Lugging the nail gun with air hose up and down ladder a hundred times wasn't fun. But that's a once every 20 yr job.

I have this Milwaukee M18 2nd gen brad nailer. It's great.
As a second choice, the 1st gen Ryobi brad nailer is rated very good too, right now on sale $99 tool only from Home depot. Ryobi battery kit deals happen many times during the year if you don't already have a Ryobi battery.

For occasional use I've heard good things about the Ryboi P321. It is a bit slower and may struggle with very hard woods but a solid gun for $100.

I don't own any Ryobi tools yet, so no batteries. Does the p321 nailer at $99 plus the 2 pack 4amp hour batteries with charger (PCL204KN) for $99 sound like a "deal"? $200 all in. Gun/2 batteries/charger.
I have a small compressor and a $30 nailer for that. but i don't use it but a few times a year. I can lug the stuff out for that. kind of crazy price for a nailer ...don't understand why cordless nailers are so expensive compared to other m18 stuff. they'll come down eventually, and i'll buy one

Gotcha. You said these were $100 too much so I thought you had another model in mind. I'm done dragging around a compressor and hose. Lol.

the ryobi one.
you can get them cheap on sale from DTO. Only way i'd buy them from HD is if it was during a sale and it came with a few batteries.
the only downside against a pneumatic one is the size, but if you don't need to get into tight spaces then it's fine.

Keep an eye out for $x off with purchase of $x promotions with this one. At OPT they had a promo for $50 off a $250 Milwaukee purchase that made this an even better deal. I wouldn't be surprised if we see something similar with other holidays coming.
