Ahh, we have found the SDer who only plays locally produced, artisanal, curated, hand finished games. A rare one in the wild.

My 5 year old disagrees. Not all of these suck, inflation is terrible, plenty of us will get lots of play out of them, and no game you are think of is even close to $6.

Thanks for playing.

Nobody should buy Guess Who the way it's made now. Spend the extra money on the classic Guess Who. Very much worth it.
Yep. Nothing like the original. I miss the characters I grew up playing with. It's also complete garbage now where the pictures fall out so easily if makes it almost unplayable.

All of these are much lower quality paper stuff now.
At $6 it's just OK.
Also check local Five Below for varitations of these with better plastic.

$10 Super Mario Monopoly might be good, though.

there's no need to play mass market junk like these games when there's literally hundreds of fantastic easy to play games that can be bought for relatively cheap.
Don't know why you're getting thumbed down for stating the truth. Some people let nostalgia prevent them from enjoying actually good board games.

Ah we found the SDer who only plays cheaply made, mass market, nostalgic, board games. A common one in the wild.

My 5 year old disagrees. Most of these games suck, and there are many modern games that are just as inexpensive, better made, and aren't so heavily based on luck. Some of these can't even be classified as a game. No choices are even made in Candy Land, i.e. you flip a card and move. The same is true with Chutes and Ladders, roll and move. Perfect if you want your child to be frustrated by performing mindless actions where they have no control over the outcome of the game. The above poster listed Sushi Go and No Thanks which are around the same price and are amazing games.

Thank you for playing (if you can even call it that).

While I agree that these games do not necessarily require strategy, they are good for learning simple tasks such as counting and colors. And of course it also helps with learning to take turns and dealing with winning and losing, both of which are valuable lessons that kids and adults alike should learn nowadays.

My First Carcassonne [amazon.com] is great for that age range.

For the most part I think you are overthinking this, as sometimes with real young kids you just need a game that kinda plays itself like Candy Land or Trouble. MY 5 year old gets frustrated to the point of tears if she makes the wrong choice in a game. Believe it or not ... I'm not trying to build character or make them more intelligent every waking moment of my kid's life, as that sounds very exhausting. Sometimes we're just hanging out. I know there is probably a game by Hans Klueber that has a better Board Game Geek rating than Candy Land; I don't care.

HOWEVER

Chutes and Ladders should have been banned by the Geneva Convention. The first time my kid got sent all the way back to the beginning on the nasty chute that's like 3 spaces before the end ... nuh uh. Never again. Goodwill'd instantly.
