I've bought a lot of backpacks from SD.

This one is my most used and favorite, primarily because it's the perfect size and has the best/most versatile functionality. It's small enough I've never had an airline complain about it being my personal item, but large enough for a 3 night stay all in one bag.

I've tried to find higher quality bags with the same dimensions and general shape without spending gobs of money, but just haven't been able to. It is solid quality, but it is still Ozark so temper expectations on that front.

Im tempted to buy a spare but my wife will not be happy.

I got that one a few years ago, if I remember correctly it was on a sale at 10 dollars or so. I love it, it is large and held up perfectly while being light and comfortable.

I use this as my gym bag. Big enough to fit clothes, shoes and a basketball!

Planning to use it as personal item bag for air travel but it exceeds 18" max length? With stuff in, it may go well over 20-22". Faced any concern?

This always depends on your airline and gate agents. With not too much a difference I just pack in a way I can pull something out and squish it if I need. Rarely am k checked and usually regret not bringing a bigger bag. Better safe than sorry though.

I've never had an airline give me a hard time about large backpacks. I'm always nervous that they will. If you see them enforcing bag measurements on other passengers ahead of you in line, you can get around that by taking one or two wearable items out of the backpack and either tying them around your waist or throwing them over your shoulder to reduce the bag size. The bag just needs to be able to squash down and fit in their little measuring thing. I usually wear my bulkiest shoes and clothing onto a plane so it leaves more space in the bag for other items and reduces its size.

I've flown with this at least 30 times, and have never had a question. It fits well under the seats.

I'll note I do not fly airlines like Spirit, so YMMV there.

I ve had this exact same backpack for years as well. I always take it with my on my travels and it still looks as good as new. Very sturdy and the hard shell top pouch is surprisingly useful as well when you want to have easy access to things that might otherwise easily get crushed when you i.e. slide it under an aircraft seat. Thinking about it Id probably consider this one of those best buys items we all tend to have.
